Oh, definately always use first person. Just do it at the beginning, like "I believe that x is valid/not valid/only partially valid" and never mention it again. That way you tick any personal boxes the marker might think of, make a value judgement, but still keep a sense of formality.

SC is a joke. At grammar, we never even had trial SCs, or practise SCs. We never studied for it. We just walked in and did it. That's how little importance our school placed on it, and it's hard to find anyone who got below 90 in anything at our school.
