I guess it's something that a lot of people would have to do anyway. It doesn't look great if you did community activities up until Year 11 or Year 12 and stopped for uni...employers would be looking for your most recent initiatives. Maybe if I do Com/Law I'll just do a semester of mooting for the sheer heck of it :D

lol...you didn't even need the co-op scholarship - 99.95 was enough for a full scholarship into USyd anyway...hehe.

Btw. what made you choose UNSW over a full scholarship @ USyd...I imagine that it's a difficult decision that confronts quite a few students.
Yeah tough decision. No scholarship + UNSW vs Sydney + 6k a year.
I guess I preferred to get straight into medicine rather than science. And I live really close to UNSW, and being the lazy bum I am...

Anyway, back on topic, they like lots of leadership and "projecty" stuff for co-op, or so I hear. Here's a situation from my school:

One person, right near the top in the year at maths, + music and sport, didn't even get an interview.

I had good maths results, did debating + chess + some others, but no sport or music, got an interview but missed out on scholarship.

Both of us really wanted to do med.

Last person, ok at maths, strong on sport, air cadets, duke of ed, got the scholarship.

Yeah don't try to bs your interviewer because its pretty hard. I think the co-op people saw right through me :D
Of course, don't lie, since you'll catch a snag somewhere... but bending the truth... now that's pretty safe. :p

I wonder if I can use things such as Australian Business Week as an example of teamwork and leadership...I've been captain of my tennis team a few times, not that it's anything special at my school - it virtually just means you have to hand in the scorecard :D - then again, the interviewers wouldn't know that :)

Exactly right. Throw in as much stuff as possible, particularly if it sounds good, and captain of tennis certainly does.

Shafqat so do they base the scholarships on maths results?
Well in the scholarship form they ask you to fill in your ranks for all your subjects, and for actuarial I think they place special emphasis on maths. But others on the boards know far more abt this topic than me, so my words aren't authoratative.

Even if it actually means nothing :)

I think you only need the UAI for a BComm, and it doesn't matter much what it is besides that.

When do we tell them all this, shaf? At the interview?

Because, for example, the Malcom-Chaikin scholarships mention "you may attach a brief CV of no more than 4 pages if you want to" so you could do it there, but others like the Rural Engineering ones tell you not to attach anything like that. Or do we mention it in the questions they ask on the forms?

I think they encourage you to apply if you think you'll get a UAI of 97 or more...although I'm not entirely sure.

At USyd you have to enclose a "personal statement" with all scholarship applications, which is virtually an opportunity to flaunt your qualities. I'm not sure about other unis though.

Btw. when they say "extra curricular", does that necessarily mean outside of school or just outside school work? How about things like the Titration Comp and RACI Chemistry Quiz?...they're not really part of school work, but they still relate to school work.

Yah I'm not the greatest person to ask these questions, cos usyd and co-op are the only two I applied for. nit probably knows more abt malcom-chaikin than me, and he knows the guy who got the scholarship for this year pretty well too.

Hmm i have no idea as sometimes i spend hours just browsing bos. He doesn't have many posts, so should be easy to find. Look in usyd section for the scholarships thread. It was basically "Im smart, do extra curicular, so give me the scholarship." Imo it seemed a little ot, however it worked!
