    Have they started PIP Marking?

The PIPs went in last term so I suspect that they have already been marked. They aren't marked at the same time as the exams but, like all the other major works, when they are submitted.

    Major Work Topic

Six Day War probably would 'significantly overlap' with the examinable syllabus for the Arab-Israeli Conflict and so isn't allowed. There are ways around that but be careful. One of my students did the 1979 Iranian Revolution and found it quite interesting. He had contacts, though who were...

Do I need to do History (Ancient/Modern) to do History Extension?

Absolutely - MUST be doing either Ancient or Modern History to do History Extension. Source - the History Extension syllabus: All students study HSC History Extension concurrently with, or following completion of, the HSC course in Ancient History and/or Modern History. The course assumes...

    aligning and raw marks question!!!

Exam marks are aligned by BOSTES to report a mark that equates to a band Internal assessment marks are moderated to the exam marks Aligned exam marks and moderated internal marks are then averaged to get the final HSC mark. Final marks are scaled by UAC for ATARs

Where do HSC examiners come from

I teach at a very comprehensive school in western Sydney and all the English teachers at my school are marking HSC English this year. None have ever taught at a selective high and two have only ever taught at my school. Similar in Science although not all are marking this year. And I could go...

    internal mark calculation

When you say you have 'misadventure' for the ancient exam do you mean the final HSC? If so did you sit the actual exam or miss it altogether? If you sat it then they will consider whether you would have a better result with your exam mark or without it and then give you an appropriate mark...

I know someone who got busted for cheating in the hsc

There will be an inquiry where the student will be able to put their side of the story and then the BOSTES will make a determination about what penalty to apply from nothing to the entire HSC out the window. I have known of students who were penalised with a zero for one section of one paper...

    Sick During Exam

The generic doctor's certificate will need to be upgraded with the BOSTES form - not hard to do but means going back to the doctor's. What will happen: 1. your exam will be marked as normal 2. they will take you and your marks out of the aligning/moderating process for your cohort 3. they will...

Where do HSC examiners come from

Supervisors are not necessarily ex-teachers. The supervisors at my school over the last 20+ years have never been teachers but have been local people who are interested in helping out at the school - often parents of ex-students or even grandparents. Examiners - those who set the exams -...

    Raw mark for band 6?

Band 6 is a reported mark of 90+ but that is an aligned mark not a raw mark. There will be a group of about 6 markers who will decide what raw mark will be reported as 90.

    Forgot to write question number/option

No worries. The clerical staff will work it out and if they send a section to the wrong set of markers the marker who gets it will let their SM know who will fix it - happens every year where the wrong paper ends up somewhere but it gets sorted out.

Do i need to remember Historian names?

As a Modern marker for the most of the last 20 years (not marking this year) I have regularly given full marks to 'one interpretation is xxxx while another interpretation is yyyy' type responses where the student clearly is able to identify that there are different views about something and that...

    Handwriting

I have marked 1000s of HSC scripts over the years and that is very easy to read - no problems.

Gotta do n awards by monday or i get kicked out

If the principal doesn't sign off on 12 units for Year 11 then you won't have completed the Preliminary course and will have to redo enough Preliminary units to meet that criteria in order to then be eligible for the HSC. You have to complete 12 units in Year 11 and that is non-negotiable.

just a word with those personlaised booklets

The markers of pages with your name on them will be marking online and so will only see the pages that you wrote on and none of the pre-printed pages. They don't even get your actual student number anymore but a different number altogether.

Tick if you continued on the next page

Your entire paper will be scanned. If the marker suspects that there is another page to your response they send a message to the SM who is able to 'rebuild' the question including the extra page/s that weren't sent through the first time. Remember that a lot of subjects are now marked online...

    Student number

Before the papers leave the school the supervisors check the numbers and if there is an issue they can write it properly. When the papers reach the marking centre again the clerical staff check the numbers and if they can't read it, or suspect that the computer won't be able to read it, they...

    miss exams?

The advice the BOS would probably give is to still sit the exams AND fill in the illness/misadventure form. You don't have a real reason to actually not turn up to the exam room but do probably have a case for the exam mark to be looked at. In the scenario where you do the exam the BOS use what...

    Writing booklets

These days it is just an A3 page folded in half allowing you to write on 3 of the 4 pages thus created as the front page is where all the details about who you are are recorded.

    What is a memoir?

A diary is what you write down on or about the time something happens. A memoir is recalling those events sometime in the future often with reference to the diary but not always.
