Is it simply just recalling events in first person? Also would something like a diary entry count as a memoir or are they different things?

I'd say recalling personal events
Basically this except you use a hindsight perspective/reflective point of view.

For example: I ignored my mother. Back then, I thought she was trying to control my life but I now realise that she was just trying to look out for me.

A diary is what you write down on or about the time something happens.

A memoir is recalling those events sometime in the future often with reference to the diary but not always.
