Keep in mind that whatever extracurricular activity you do whether it be sports, debating, chess, or whatever, it's not so much about the rank or result but rather what you learnt from the experience... or what it says about you as a person.

Extra curricular also helps significantly when it comes time to apply for a scholarship or other program (eg cadetships)... or just a job in general.

Wait, people bought text books in high school? We always got some crappy old ones from the school except in a few rare cases where the books were outdated each year (eg economics) and we had to buy our own... but our school helped negotiate a discount.

As others have mentioned IPT is not that hard to get your head around and it's more around how you apply yourself to answer the questions to get maximum marks rather than it deliberately being over the top in volume of content or complexity. FYI I didn't do IST in years 9/10 and I state ranked IPT.
