How many advanced units in 1st year?

Yeah, all my subjects were advanced unless they didn't have adv units for that course. I know sci fac website says that it's not advisable to take more than 24cp of adv units per year, but imo, don't trust it. Advanced units are mostly overrated in terms of difficulty. Keeping up with...

    Favourite Mathematical Concept/trick?

Idk anything about 3rd year maths, but hmm MATH2961 without having done 1901? Wouldn't it be a little hard? but 2962 should definitely be doable and interesting. Some people I know also took logic and foundations (3rd yr unit) in their first year.

    Favourite Mathematical Concept/trick?

Nah, I only did MATH2965 and didn't do MATH2961. Maths units are my for-fun type subjects I overload on top of my normal 24cp/sem load anyway. My main interests are stats and med chem. and MATH1902! I completely forgot about it. It was indeed the hardest 1st year maths course and so the order...

    Favourite Mathematical Concept/trick?

Yep, 1st year maths is, in general, much easier than later ones. Esp true for MATH1903 lol, the 2nd easiest course ever with the 1st being discrete maths (MATH1004). EDIT: but I've been learning a bit of vector calc in these holidays and it doesn't seem much harder than MATH1901 - though...

How many advanced units in 1st year?

lolol, and yes, I happened to be the first to reply to this thread lmao. and no worries! Good decision imo. In general, there aren't huge differences between normal and advanced units except for MBLG and MATH units in 1st year. Since you aren't doing adv maths anyway, that doesn't matter but...

    Favourite Mathematical Concept/trick?

You're kinda right. DEs with partial derivatives (and no total derivatives, I think?) But you can't solve them directly in most cases. What we mostly do is that we reduce them down to ODEs to solve them. It'll involve lots of tedious algebra (not in the sense of linear algebra but tedious...

    MBLG1001 or MBLG1901?

MBLG1001 and 1901 share a large proportion of the course(s) and the differences are that: in MBLG1901, you get like 13?ish separate lectures from normal MBLG students where you learn about experiments that led to the discovery of proteins and DNA structure and so on. That is not to say that you...

What is so good about Usyd?

    lolol, definitely not.

What is so good about Usyd?

Yeah I see what you mean. One thing I kinda always seem to assume when I hear them though is that they are presumably interested in doing them - because it also doesn't make sense to me to talk about them if it's going to be irrelevant to them. Hence why I thought you were just mocking him...

What is so good about Usyd?

but that's got nothing to do with what I was talking about above. I was commenting on quality of assessments, more specifically that since 4025808 told us that USYD accounting has a crap assessment like that, I said it is not unique to USYD but is also present in UNSW although in different...

What is so good about Usyd?

lol shadowdude, I normally don't take anything against your comments when they seem logically sound and appropriate, but this one... the bolded part: Please elaborate. If such an opportunity exists, it just does. What's so far-fetched about it? How do you know if he'll prob never take it up...

    Talented Student Program Invitation

I say you're in as long as you don't write stupid things on the application form for SSP maths (it happened to a friend of mine before lol).

Are teachers necessary to get a good ATAR?

Also for me, the only teacher I needed was English teacher. I did only maths and science subjects other than English. They were quite extensively taught in textbooks unlike English where essay writing skills, etc don't seem to be well-taught through books alone. (well, for me at least)

    any worthwhile techniques for study?

I can only speak for sciences, but one thing that quite many people don't see is that going through all syllabus dotpoints thoroughly is wayyy more important than doing practice questions. Take syllabus dotpoints as exam questions and write syllabus notes (answers) to them. If you can remember...

What is so good about Usyd?

Hmm okay, I've personally never seen it happening to me but yeah, it sounds pretty bad and discriminatory. bolded bit: lol that's pretty shitty. But on similar note, I've heard that UNSW med students are forced to write essays on something pointless like "how has your concept of teamwork...

What is so good about Usyd?

lol hmm, sure they just don't have anything to say since they don't know about western sydney suburbs? but yeah, kinda awkward, it sounds. and I don't know what the actual difference is, but USYD doesn't have any policy that says someone needs to get a fail grade. In other words, if they do...

    lolol, harsh if that's true.

    Subject Selections 2012

Up to 30cp is possible without department permission. Over that, you need the Dean's permission (at least in science).

Terry Lee's 'mental method' for partial fractions allowed?

I reckon you can write it as a claim and then prove it by making RHS into LHS (much easier if you are sure that your RHS is correct).

What is so good about Usyd?

But how do they tell if someone is from western Sydney? and I think it depends on which subjects you do because I've never seen anyone like that before at USYD. lol the conceded pass thing, if someone gets 49 or lower, it's most definitely that person's fault? and I reckon everything depends...
