our teachers tell us to know ALL the episodes, but choose TWO for the exam and explore them in detail . . . makes sense to me, quality over quantity.

i think the poet used the dog as a metaphor, in order to explore the smells of the place. I thought it was kinda obvious when it said something about a wagging tail at the beginning. I don't think that it was overly important to answering the question though.

you can probably mention the links but its not a big deal . . . so long as you argue your thesis for each text effectively, there shouldn't be a problem.

as long as you show some kind of a progression in the thought process, its a journey. You could locate it on a train/airport but it would just be awkward if there's no purpose of that location - set it somewhere where it makes sense.

i really wouldn't do this story, even though its original its not the kind of "sophisticated" material HSC markers want. They're picky and you don't want to take chances. It really is up to you though, I think it'd be best to run it past a teacher and get their opinion on it.
