btw mjennings, are you sure of your 3u rank? cos I'm not sure what mine is, and I've gotten within one mark of you for every assessment, so it'd be about the same...

ah yeah, makes sense. I thought you had gotten it off ribbans or something haha. But I'm pretty sure our rank is around there.

the person coming second in our school for eng last year got a higher state ranking then the chick coming first. she must've raped the externals.

heh motivation for a state rank right here, considering I'm coming 1st in MX1 :L

nah honestly I reckon it's impossible unless if I get full marks internally...

but generally speaking, if you want to aim for a state rank, the best way is to come 1st in your internals, and aim for full marks in the exams. That way a state rank will be possible

Your school ranking cant screw you, a student can still get a state ranking even if they go to a school ranked last in the state.
Actually, your internal mark is scaled according to how well your school does. That's why its a massive disadvantage to be really smart at a school that is not very smart.
Eg. Last year the average internal mark at my school for 3u maths was in the 70s, but everyone's HSC marks were really good, so the internal marks got scaled up to mid 90s.

& you can find out how well raw hsc marks scale, maximum mark for each subject etc here:

i think youre mistaken. i believe that the person coming first internally, gets the top external mark as their external no matter what, and the person coming last gets the lowest external mark. then everyone inbetween gets moderated depending on how the rest of the class went.
but if youre first, it dont get scaled down due to how everyone else went. other wise you wouldnt have people in schools ranked in the 400's getting 99

Yeah, i'm talking about the moderation of the internal mark... Your external mark doesn't depend on your school at all.

Correct. Last year, we had 4 english state ranks, except the girl who got first in the state was actually around about 8th internally. The guy who was first ended up getting a state ranking of 4th.

This. The whole "if I go to a high ranking school it will scale my ATAR up" argument is a fallacy based on false logic and innuendo. If you are a great student you will do well no matter if you go to james ruse or some school ranked 500th in the state. Same applies if you are an average student or poor student. The HSC is designed so that every person has an equal opportunity to succeed. It doesnt discriminate based on the quality of school you go to.

basically, 1st place internal rank + raping of externals (i.e. 98-100/100) = state rank

Awkward for you, cos you're completely wrong.

How does this prove that a high ranking school will scale you up? The problem with this issue is that people often struggle to interpret the facts. For example, a person coming 1st out of 50 in a subject at James Ruse is probably going to get a higher internal mark then a person who is coming 1st out of 50 in the same subject at a school ranked 500th. Why? Because a person coming first at James Ruse is probably far superior to a person coming first at a school ranked 500th. However, if by some rare chance both of these students are equally as good and score the same on their HSC examination, then their HSC exam mark, internal mark and final marks will be equal.

I myself was led to believe in year 10 that I was doomed because I went to a low ranking school, but this is simply not the case. Many people manipulate and sensationalise the facts to make it seem that your school ranking will control your ATAR. The truth is that the single biggest determining factor of a students ATAR is the student themselves. These voodoo myths about your school scaling you up and others simply are not true. If you dont believe me, then start a thread on the issue and Í'm sure you will get similar responses.

Well say you’re average at a high ranking school. Your raw internal mark is 80. But then you go to do the HSC, where you get a mark of 93, and its also the average HSC mark within your school. So then they would probably look at all the school’s internal marks and go, they probably had harder internal assessments, and the internal mark is not a reflection of your ability compared to the state, so then they would probably scale the average internal mark within that school to the 90s.

Whereas if you get an internal mark of 90 within your school, which is the average, and then you only get 80 in the HSC exam, which is your school’s average mark, they’ll look at your school and go, obviously this school had easier assessments. And then they scale everyone’s marks down.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but if you look at it practically, school's that do better in a certain subject as a whole are more likely to have more state ranks. Given, if you're truly exceptional at a crap school, you could probably get a state rank, but for everyone else, this is how it works...

First of all, your raw internal marks are not factored into calculating your final internal marks. I went to a poorly ranked school and I wasnt scaled down. I remember I had a raw internal mark of 68% in SOR 1 but my final internal mark was 88.

Go to the ATAR & HSC Marks (Guidance and Counsel) Section and read the threads that ask for the ATAR estimation....After reading them you will realise a similarity! Not only do people post their ranks...THEY ALSO POST THEIR SCHOOL RANK!

Now why would people bother posting their school rank i wonder....

Thats so we can put their ranks into perspective. A person coming 5th out of 50 at James ruse is probably going to get a higher mark in that subject then someone coming 5th out of 50 at a school ranked 500th

I said that in one of my earlier posts. Dont forget, we are giving an estimate, its not an exact science. A person coming 5th out of 50th in the 500th ranked school could beat some coming 5th at James Ruse. But it is unlikely. why? Because the Ruse student is probably far superior.

This is a complicated subject hence all the confusion. I'd invite you or tambam to start a thread to clarify this issue
