Well say you’re average at a high ranking school. Your raw internal mark is 80. But then you go to do the HSC, where you get a mark of 93, and its also the average HSC mark within your school. So then they would probably look at all the school’s internal marks and go, they probably had harder internal assessments, and the internal mark is not a reflection of your ability compared to the state, so then they would probably scale the average internal mark within that school to the 90s.
Whereas if you get an internal mark of 90 within your school, which is the average, and then you only get 80 in the HSC exam, which is your school’s average mark, they’ll look at your school and go, obviously this school had easier assessments. And then they scale everyone’s marks down.
I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but if you look at it practically, school's that do better in a certain subject as a whole are more likely to have more state ranks. Given, if you're truly exceptional at a crap school, you could probably get a state rank, but for everyone else, this is how it works...
