Cheap housing doesn't always make a profit, don't you understand?

By the time they pay for staff in the housing office, cleaners, gas, electricity, water, maintenance, occasional housing activities during o week, rates, not to mention repayments on the massive loans they took out to pay for the buildings, it isn't making a profit at the moment.

Plus the housing service also provides listings and assistance for students to find private residential accomodation. These services are provided free of charge.

Tell me where they make their money? When they buildings are paid off they may make a profit, but they can't run at a loss to pay off the buildings.

And yes, VSU would mean the end of the UTS accomodation levy that students pay, which is money they currently use to pay off their debt after the purchase of gumal ngurang.

U say there not making a profit??? How in 2003 they were making a reasonable net profit, cant find there 2004 report. Also Profit would only be effected in that transaction by interest and repayment expenses

Plus... on your idea of how things work, should people get youth allowance? Should you be paying taxes so that other people can benefit from services such as youth allowance etc? Isn't the tax system similar in a way to how university unions function? Isn't a university community, built by paying union fees, a microcosm of the real world (Australian society as a whole)?

BTW 2004 was when UTS Housing bought the new building, so that would be the more important thing to find. I am no expert on the finances of the housing service. I am just saying what I have heard from several sources. It is an area of concern in my opinion.

If private companies are getting into housing, i can tell you, the housing at universities will survive. I'd also assume that people who live in university housing can get youth allowance as they are independants, and rent assistance?

I think they need to be independent, which usually means working for 18mths away full-time or something

Unfortunately, it would seem campus culture is of little relevance to 1st yr'ers, especially those who go to under-funded universities where uni socialisation is fairly minimal through lack of societies and clubs, and general socialisation is fairly unusual unless it be via the internet. You call us selfish and yet you expect us to fund your holistic university experience? Maybe I want such an experience, but I prefer to define it through events outside of the university itself, how does this make us any less credible? Or should I either conform to what the union considers such an experience or pay for it twice?
