Visual Representation of Belonging? (1 Viewer)

I need help creating a visual representation for the quote "more than anything else belonging is about acceptance" and it also needs to relate to my texts, The Crucible by Arthur Miller and New Boy (short film about a boy who changes schools, you can watch on youtube).

Hi there iichar,

First up, it might be worth considering what your skills are in terms of creating a visual work. Are you able to draw/use photoshop/etc because that will have an influence of your ability to represent the quote.

Also, what is it you need help with? The creation of the visual, or relating it to your texts?

Not having seen New Boy myself, the most obvious link between the two would be concerned with belonging to a community. Perhaps you could visually represent this with an image of a group of people and demonstrate their view towards belonging to that group through aspects such as body language or facial expressions.

Hey! I was considering just drawing onto a poster.
I need help relating it really. I cant really identify 'acceptance' within The Crucible to relate the representation to
I want it to have more connection such as contextual references rather than just a group of people with one person standing outside of it.
Ive noted some similarities between the text
Belonging
- The characters are to a new place (Puritans contextually were new to Salem, Joseph (New Boy) has just moved to Ireland from Africa
- Abigail and Joseph both witnessed the death of their parents and this has changed their characters

Acceptance
- John must accept sins to belong (be forgived by Elizabeth)
- In New Boy, the kids need to accept differences/ be more accepting

My two texts show acceptance/belonging differently so I'm unsure how to visually show it
The Crucible shows that 'you need to accept yourself to belong' (Elizabeth cannot forgive John unless he forgives himself)
New Boy shows that 'others need to accept you to belong' (The kids need to accept Joseph's racial diversity for him to belong)

I was thinking creating a mirror image to represent Johns 'accepting himself' and perhaps a Crucifix to represent belonging to community (religious) (maybe this could also be used to represent community in New Boy as it is based in Ireland, since its a Christian Country?)

I pretty much just need a twist to this to show that its not always your choice

Visual doesn't always mean picture/collage etc. It can also include performances, demonstrations, video etc. That's another angle to look at.

It looks like you've done some brainstorming and that's definitely helping a development of your ideas. It is probably good to keep away from cliches like having one person standing separate from the rest of the group, and I like that you want to involve contextual references as well.

I think your struggle lies in the fact that it's very hard to visually represent something that's conceptual (eg Proctor forgiving himself). The use of a mirror effect is a good idea, but I'm not entirely convinced it will fully communicate the subtleties you're trying to get across.

This is actually a really great point, except often schools do mean 'picture' or 'video' when they say 'visual'. In my personal experience (I'm prepared to be proven wrong here), performances and demonstrations are part of a separate assessment, and therefore not deemed appropriate for a visual task.

iichar, if you do end up considering a performance or demonstration, definitely check with your teacher beforehand.

Oh, agreed, definitely check. I know I did a compilation of performances for mine, but it was something I checked with my teachers first.
