To sketch a picture of the New South Wales western railway line, all that’s required is an endless wire fence and a few rough looking gum trees, add a few sheep scampering away from the train tracks and the image you are left with would be that of any given section along the tracks.
Almost every railway town in the country consists of a public house and a general store. There would also be a water tank and a school nearby. You would also find a bar, probably known by the locals as the railway hotel. The hotel would most probably have a few young, messily dressed men sitting outside drinking.
Along the line you may also see country hiker, camping near the tracks with a tent and a small fire.
On board the train itself, you will most likely see cheap suits, sunburnt faces and unfashionable hats. As the train continues to travel you will cross the Macquarie river. It is nothing more than a narrow muddy gutter with a dog swimming across it and maybe three goats looking on.
Further on in the trip, you may notice what’s known as a sundowner, a man who is known to arrive at his destination he planned on sleeping at, right on dusk so that he wont have to contribute to any labour. He would have a billy in one hand and a stick in the other. He would be dressed in a faded tailcoat, a flannelette shirt, and a pair of moleskin trousers. This outfit would be topped of with a straw hat.
As the train passes Nevertire you would notice how dry the terrain is. None of the land would be fit for sitting on, its dry as could be. It rarely rains this far west. As you move on to Byrock you would start to notice shearers. Dressed like the unemployed they still show an independence and confidence. They sit on trucks and bails of hay along the train line fence. As the train stops in this area rougher country folk board the trains, furry beards and wellington boots are evident in the passengers attire.
As the train continues you will meet the one known as the bush liar. Dressed like a larrikin his name is Jim. He has been everywhere and almost seen everything. He had worked with the best but was still clueless to many things.
As the sun sets on the horizon. You may notice a line of camels wandering aimlessly. Once you see this picture, you’ve reached your destination, bourke, Western New South Wales.
