Units of study, electives etc for B health sciences (1 Viewer)

Could someone please help me out, i'm so confused lol. I was enrolled by proxy because I was in Melbourne at the time of enrolment so as a result didn't get to ask any questions or clarify things.
With year 1 and the generic electives, are there specific electives that would be beneficial to me if i'm wanting to become a speech pathologist that i would not already be doing in my speech and hearing 2nd major stream???
I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me out with this

Hi Olivia,
As you probably already know, you begin studying your major in second year. In first year you only do 2 electives and theyre both in semester 2. All the semester 1 units (foundations of health science, health science and research, human biology and psychology 1001) are core units that you need to complete and all students are enrolled in these. In semester 2 you do 2 core units (health determinants and interventions and health care resources and systems) and your 2 electives. Your electives dont need to be chosen until May so you have plenty of time. Most people I know who are doing hearing and speech as their second major just chose subjects they enjoy for the electives (eg psychology 1002) because all the subjects are within the hearing and speech second major stream. Though, if any, I would suggest a linguistics subject which could be done through the faculty of health science or the faculty of arts. Im sure when you start uni though there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about second majors and electives (last year they had 2 forums for BHS students where people just asked questions about majors and electives). Hi Viv,
With the semester 2 electives you can really just pick anything. I know plenty of people doing the movement science major who picked subjects completely unrelated to the major. All the subjects you need are contained within the major. Though if you want to get ahead you could pick an anatomy and physiology subject which could help you when you start the major (you also do human biology in semester 1) or you could get in contact with a staff member who can recommend subjects to you. Electives in the BHS can be taken from any faculty, (that includes science, arts and economics and business) and you just need to fill the prerequisites to take them. You can take a look at the handbooks (Handbooks Online - Faculty handbooks - The University of Sydney) to see what subjects interest you. But remember, electives dont need to be finalised until towards the end of semester 1 (you will be advised once you start uni).
As for textbooks, you will be told in lectures what books you need. Last year we needed 'Research Methods for the Health Sciences' by Pepper et al (for HSBH 1007), 'Psychology Themes and Variations' (7th edition) by Wayne Weiten (for PSYC1001) and 'Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology' by Seeley Stephens and Tate for BIOL1003. Im selling the psychology book if youre interested.

Also just one more question lol you know how you have to choose 4 BHS senior units of study..do you do all these throughout the first year of study or do u study them throughout the whole 3 yrs of the BHS course? Also, which ones do u recommend...

Hey Viv,
You do the 4 BHS units of study in second or third year. Though I suppose if they were available and you were allowed to enrol you could do one or two in second semester of first year (in second semester 2009 the only ones available are HSBH3001 Health of indigenous populations and HSBH3003 health service strategy and policy). I havent dont any of them as yet so I wouldnt know which ones to recommend, but you only have to pick four.

Nah, there wasnt any chemistry in any of the first year subjects (I suppose that depends on what electives you choose, but just choose electives without chemistry!). The most was probably a bit of very basic chem in human biology, which you could memorize straight out of the textbook (the human bio textbook is probably the most important one to get - you will need it!!).

Im in BHS now and I know of a few people who didnt do biology in year 12 but still did human biology (they did quite well too, got a credit). I did biology in year 12 and there wasnt really that much in human bio related to it. Though, that being said, it is quite an intense and difficult subject as there are a lot of concepts to get your head around in a small amount of time. Really, if you study consistently for it you should be fine, you just need to keep on top of the workload.

Honestly i don't think the biology bridging course will give you that much of an advantage. The concepts are all learnt in class and if you pay attention etc, you'll be fine.

You dont have to choose your electives until the end of first semester, thats no problem. You can do anything as an elective and from any faculty. Im in BHS now and people I know did do astronomy as an elective so thats no problem. Electives do count towards your final GPA, everything you complete during the degree does.

It is possible to take health science and research in semester 2 (you may have to double check at enrolment, sometimes they dont run it in the second semester. However I know they ran it in both sem 1 and 2 in 2009). So yes, you can do the two junior bio units in semester 1 and complete the rest of the junior health science units in semester 2. In second and third year all you need to do then is take units to complete your major and 4 senior health science units. Hope this helps. Any questions feel free to ask

I think I read something like that online (waiting for the handbook to be mailed out) but after reading and scrolling through all those pages it becomes a giant mush! Tiny text for people with 20/20 vision!

I chose BHS as I am still torn between two paths and could not decide! After you choose the second major with your BHS units, are there still some units free to look into the specialised health science units? It does not help one bit that the two areas I am looking at (OT and diagnostic radiography) are worlds apart and i'm trying to pick a major that can cover both of them! So thinking like Bio, Anatomy or chem

Open day made me like both options more! Ughhhhh

The credit points required for the second major really depends on what major you choose. But GENERALLY it requires 36 credit points of senior units (6 subjects) along with 12 credit points of junior units (2 subjects done in first year). But as I said it depends on the major you choose, here is a link to the science majors available and it states what subjects you need Science Degrees and Majors - Current Undergraduates - The University of Sydney. There will be units free for the specialised health science units, Im just going into third year now and Ive only got one more health science unit to do (you only have to do 4 senior level units).

When I'm enrolling (for Exercise and Sport Science) on the 28th, do I need to chose any electives ?
