Yes The Bull is biased and I haven't had a chance to read the article in full, I was merely quoting the bit that stuck in my mind.

Fact remains though that is a hugely stupid claim to state that Sonia is "our new SRC President" when clearly we have to have an election first.

Apparently Angus is the favourite, which makes me want to puke. Repeatedly. There is a SERIOUS lack of decent candidates running this year.

Well, Sonia is a damned good candidate. I wouldn't be supporting her bid for the Presidency if I didn't think so. In 2004 or 2005, I ran because I felt that there were no good candidates for the Presidency. I was, in fact, ready to run for the Presidency myself this year - I had collected my 10 signatures and written my statement. I chose NOT to run because I believe that Sonia is the fantastic candidate that the SRC desperately needs.

Yes, she's coming from behind in this election. Yes, she has less campaign money than even the Greens. And yes, she doesn't have the support of any of the Left-wing tickets. What she DOES have though is sensible policy that will guarantee the existance of essential services into 2007 and beyond, and more importantly puts the "students'" back in "students' representative council".

And yes, if you're a guy Angus either wants to kick your arse, or fuck it. The Bull will report that Angus is the favourite because its editors are all members of the same Faction.

Please stop being homophobic... it's offensive.
Only one of the four editors of the Bull (SJ) is a member of Angus' faction.

They're all members of Labor factions.

Also, it's not homophobic if it's true. That quote actually came from a (gay) classmate of mine (who will be supporting Sonia and Voice), and I sort of appropriated it for this discussion. Because one, if a gay person says it, it's not homophobic. And two, 'cos it's so fucking true.

Using that logic, you could walk up to any of the African-American students on campus and greet them with "hey nigger" without consequence. Why don't you try it some time?

Andrew, please desist from making derogatory comments about candidates in this election here. You could easily have just said "Angus likes men" and left it at that.

Yes, that was a warning.

And you should know that the factions hate each other more at times than they hate the Libs. So just because they are Labor doesn't automatically mean they all support Angus.

Who cares? You don't have to state things in such a crude fashion when a different and normal comment would have sufficed.

Oh come on, his faction have won the election the last how many years? Of course he's going to be the favourite.

Personally I wouldnt be suprised if student power wins prez. They and the socialists seem to be putting in the most effort, with Angus's crew putting in suprisingly little, and the Libs seem to have only started today.

Both Labor and Liberals are campaigning over at UTS until thursday, so they've left skeleton crews to man USYD. That, and the constant rain have made it difficult to campaign.

I hope you've all seen the new Voice posters going up around the uni. Ironically, the "evil right-wing fascists" are the ONLY team using recycled paper.

NOLS always have numbers and experience on the day.

Here's to hoping Angus has his sunglasses placed in the middle of his shirt the whole campaign like he did during Union. :)

Yeah you'd get bashed. The correct phrase is "Yo Niggaaaahhhh, would ya lend me a pencil?".

Im not a big fan of Gabrielle Meagher - but she totally owned annoying SRC election people at my ECOP1002 lecture today. This guy was talking and she was like. 'Ok go away now'.

And the one that Phanatical is supporting got heckled in the HSTY1044 lecture for being too liberal.

I heard about that, some of the students I spoke to who were in that lecture said that Sonia dealt with the hecklers very well.

Sonia and some socialist alternative guy were both pwned in my maths lecture today. Sonia was pwned by the dirty, dirty socialist, who was in turn pwned by the lecturer, who told him to shut up and get out :D

You guys are weird.

And it disappoints me that you would advocate such racist sentiments Bec.

Although we don't have posters in twenty different languages, Sonia's team is still the most racially and culturally diverse of the lot. If there were ANY racist sentiments there, we would not be supporting Sonia and Voice.

Which racist sentiments, Raph?

Whilst, although I disagree with a lot of the sentiments of WAFs post, I still see a lot of humour in it, and I am not, as you know, someone who is particularly PC. I consider myself as having an open and pretty accepting sense of humour, but i truly fail to see the humour in this comment: "The SRC acknowledges that it is meeting on Queen Elizabeth II's traditional land."

Whilst I am not up in arms at this comment, I do find it a little offencive.

Again, i reiterate that I am not radically left, I mean, I personally realise that our Prime Minister saying sorry would be seen as an admission of guilt thus open the door to ridiculous legal trials that could totally fuck the country. But I really feel that comments like that will always be insensitive and are really not necessary.

I understand that it was said in a humorous context, but I also know that there is some truth to it's sentiments.

Having said that, I come to this forum for recreation, and I really can't be bothered to become involved in some vicious argument, especially with someone who is so fanatical about such an extremist ideology as it will lead no where.

PS. I am voting for Angus because he wears D&G glaces.

Having said that, I am to a certain extent tempted to vote for a right wing SRC just because I wouldn't mind seeing what it would be like...just for the change factor really. I am also against student spending on issues that really do not affect students (eg. anti war campaigns). Also, Honi would be quite interesting...but I would miss Ramona Spanx

End stream of consciousness.

The Honi and Bull, not to mention all SRC proceedings, constantly refer to the "acknowledgement of country". This is read at the beginning of almost all major Union/SRC events, and comments of this sentiment are published in all Union/SRC publications.

Justin's comments were pure parody of this policy - and obviously a Sonia and Voice SRC would not actually pass such policy for any other reason than to piss off a few hippies - but if this is racist, then there ain't much left that isn't.

Personally though (and I do not speak on behalf of Sonia or Voice on this issue), I oppose this "acknowledgement". The policy is an implicit acknowledgement that we are (and I quote) "trespassers on aborigine land" - and I am confident in saying that I am NOT a trespasser on anybody's land. I was born in this country (in Ryde Hospital, to be exact) and I proudly hold Australian citizenship. Even though I am of Chinese heritage, I believe that I have as much birthright to this country as any aborigine born less than two hundred years ago.

To acknowledge the history of this land is not racist.
To suggest that people like me are trespassers IS.
