Although vote driven, i think it's a good idea. There are a lot of political issues which affect sixteen year olds, i think it's positive to involve young people in politics and promote political awareness. We shall see.

edit: basically what shodan said.
mate, just post some fucking pics aite?

Huh? He was talking about liberals and not the conservatives (e.g. the liberal party).

If you pay tax, you should be eligible to vote.

ie No taxation without representation

Should adults who don't pay tax not have the right to vote?

Why would people who want to vote liberal vote for rudd?
sigh...

I mean as in liberalism, not the liberal party (which is why I said as opposed to conservatives, as in conservatism).

If this legislation was truly passed wouldnt it dumb down our democracy? Certainly there are very intellectual 16 yr olds, but the majority are idiots.

Althought it was be very funny, seeing those lads walking into the voting office with a red bull in one hand and a phone in the other. "Cuz cuz, come and vote bro"

Not everybody is an intellectual, however I'm sure that many sixteen and seventeen year olds would be able to recognise which leader does offer the best.

1/ Most sixteen and 17 year olds don't give a shit.

and

2/ I have to disagree because I doubt that many 16 & 17 year olds are knowledgeable. You are smart, yes, you are intelligent. However you don't represent the majority or even a sizeable minority.

Yeah, very smart move. Rudd has made several changes that economically don't affect the country in a negative way yet are seen has huge steps. His idea to say 'sorry' was an example of this and now we see this. Tbh i think he should keep something up his sleeve for when he is down in popularity.

16 year olds already pay tax, receive welfare (mostly their parents do on their behalf), attend school, etc etc. In short by 16 an individual is already the victim and/or beneficiary of the state and so should have a say in how it is run.

I hate what you say but defend your right to say*..... if we aren't letting 16 year olds vote because they might vote in a way we don't agree with then we may as well restrict adult voting in the same manner....

You are right though that the youth vote will likely go to labor and more alarmingly the greens and other fringe parties and so will be an electoral advantage to them... something about people who aren't socialists as teenagers having no heart and people who aren't capitalists by their thirties having no brain*....

My confession is that in my first election (can't remember which election it was) I voted ALP in the lower house and Greens in the upper house. I did however get in a heated argument with one of the Green spruikers... a sign of things to come...

*to lazy to check exact quotes
My first election at federal level was 07, I voted for Barrack Obama in the lower house and the senate. I live in the safest labor seat in the country, it's a fucking joke and I feel disenfranchised.
