Well there's not a lot of ANU students on BOS so I thought it would be easier on everyone if the 08ers (and 09ers i guess) could just post questions on their minds here.

Well I have quite a few questions.

1. What are gangs like in Canberra? I'm sure far less of an issue then it is in sydney.

2. What is the community like in self-catered colleges? I have heard catered halls/colleges have a really tight community.

I recall reading that the business and economics faculty at anu is the highest ranked in australia.
I'm thinking of doing an economics degree so anyone with any official sources, that would also help me greatly.

Not really an issue. I've never seen a real gang [in canberra], i rarely see a pub fight. Nothing to be concerned about. Most people who get in fights bring it on themselves, and from what i've seen it usually occurs on a saturday night [co-insides the weekend when canberra locals and ADFA boys can come out to drink] (uni night when everyone from anu students drink is a thursday)

2. What is the community like in self-catered colleges? I have heard catered halls/colleges have a really tight community.

catered colleges have very stong communities - because you're eating together at the same time - you meet everyone and you know whats going on. Self-catered colleges have a good community too, but they are a bit more distant because they eat at different times and therefore dont have to socialise together on a regular basis.

Is Canberra as boring as what people make it to be?? Everyone here in the west reckons the lifestyle in Canberra is as boring as Perth is and is the reason why many people from Perth don't apply to ANU. Will it be worth giving up Perth to go to Canberra?

Im very interested at studying Actuarial Studies and willing to go to ANU but I want to know do a lot of people apply to ANU for Actuarial Studies? How many places does ANU offer for Actuarial Studies??

yes. I did and i don't regret it at all. However if you are scared of living away from mummy for longer than 10minutes, i advise against it .

Large, pretty social, friendly environment, not too fast paced. Not full of snobs unlike other uni's i visited in sydney (i wont say ANU is snob free though lol, but i dont run into many people i dont like).

Top of the line. heaps, i mean heaps of computers and libraries. http://infocommons.anu.edu.au/List_LabsAll <-- has some the labs ANU has, Plus each college would have 20 comps each too.

Lecture halls are all good. Lectures are recorded and put online. Most lecture slides are put up too. Seating/desks are all new and are not falling apart.

Libraries have all been refurbished, usual swipe card technology for everything/

Is it better to live on campus or off?

live on campus for the 1st year. Its a great community, and it allows you to get your feet in canberra. I strongly suggest this way, and why not with the 1st year guarantee. unlike in other cities, on campus accom isnt just for internationals, id say 20-25% of johns is international. This is the same across most colleges/

People give canberra 'shit' because the last time they were here was on a school excursion when they were 13. It's alot better than what everyone thinks.

Unsure, look at the UAI, if you think you will meet the requirement then you will get in. It doesnt really fluctuate like other uni's.

Retail/coffee shop wise - you will find one if you actually want it. There are heaps of jobs from what i've seen - especially for casual 'sales' staff.

EDIT - UL is quite expensive (still cheap on sydney terms), but everywhere else seems pretty well priced. Especially when it includes food, electricty, water etc etc

So everything you need is at the UNI?

There are libraries, banks, shops, chemist, doctor, food, mobile stores, internet, 2 pubs/bars, bottle shops etc. I have heard rumours of international b&G students never leaving anu campus for 1 whole semester.

Also, with the lectures, how long does it take the Lecturers to post up the slides and so forth?

the recordings take about 5min from when the lecturer presses the "stop" button to come up on the internet. The slides are at the lecturer's discression. Many of them put it up before the lecture so you can print it out (6 slides to a page) and write on them in the actual lecture.

Are the lecturers good?

A bit of a hard question to answer considering i havent been to any other uni's, but they do quite well imo, and they know their stuff. Most of them are doing extra research too, so they are always looking at current situations.

I didn't have a good look at this list, but it seems to only include 'library' computers.
i.e. CSIT (computer science) has about 6-8 rooms with 30 computers in each, bozo has 2 rooms with 40-50 computers.
so there are heaps of computers lol

As far as "things to do" in canberra, i've always got something to do, and i dont even have a job. For example, This weekend at johns we had Thursday (uni night drinking), Friday - Johns Ball, and Saturday - Out the back day (partying out the back at johns with a live band). Obviously this doesn't happen every week, but RA (residents association) organises many events (theme nights etc), plus i do many things with mates. On top of that, the colleges have an "interhall sports/arts shields" and so there is a whole bunch of sports/arts events held throughout the year. Tomorrow there is female softball and mens rugby league. Now im starting to sound like a catalogue lol, but seriously there is heaps of stuff to do.

And what is this about the base cutoff getting raised to 85.00?

yeh, the change of scene is tempting.

Also, i have this idea in my head that since most eco jobs are in the government sector and have something to do with parliament, that going to ANU would boost my job prospects.

now i just need someone to tell me if thats correct or if i've got it wrong.

yeah, i would much rather go into the public sector than the financial sector.
Also, since ANU is ranked 16th in the world, I'd say it would be good if you want employment overseas.

economics degrees at ANU rank just as highly as one from USyd or UMelb. the UAI requirement is lower but the courses are just as hard, from what i've gathered.

lecture slides and all that depend on the course. none of my courses are recorded, but that's because they're all maths so there's no point recording them. they all have lecture slides put up though - sometimes after the lecture, though some beforehand. i haven't been to any lectures for my differential equations course because all the lecture notes were put up online before the course even started


as for the whole change of scene thing, i definitely recommend it. if you live on campus then you'll make about 150 new friends straight away, you'll have a pretty incredibly active social life should you choose to... pretty much good fun all round.
