Well there's not a lot of ANU students on BOS so I thought it would be easier on everyone if the 08ers (and 09ers i guess) could just post questions on their minds here.

Well I have quite a few questions.

1. What are gangs like in Canberra? I'm sure far less of an issue then it is in sydney.

2. What is the community like in self-catered colleges? I have heard catered halls/colleges have a really tight community.

Thanks for your time.

there are some gangs, as long as u dont go anywhere by urself if ur female at night... always stay in groups as canberra isnt really amazingly safe, but there are ways to stay safe. the uni has routes to take at night which are well lit and stuff

and im in a self-catered college and the community is great, we're all very close and there are always events on and ways to encourage u to get to know people. i would highly reccommend u, u get close to people with things like cooking groups, where u all cook together and have a great time.. the kitchens are probably the most social place of b&g..

Not really an issue. I've never seen a real gang [in canberra], i rarely see a pub fight. Nothing to be concerned about. Most people who get in fights bring it on themselves, and from what i've seen it usually occurs on a saturday night [co-insides the weekend when canberra locals and ADFA boys can come out to drink] (uni night when everyone from anu students drink is a thursday)

catered colleges have very stong communities - because you're eating together at the same time - you meet everyone and you know whats going on. Self-catered colleges have a good community too, but they are a bit more distant because they eat at different times and therefore dont have to socialise together on a regular basis. :)
Hope this helps
okay this is not true at all
there are pub fights every saturday and thursday night at mooseheads, the adfa boys can come out every night of the week, unless they are first year, and it is generlaly the duntroon boys tht pick fights. my boyfriend is at adfa, and i have never seen any of his friends acuse trouble, i have seen duntroon boys try and cause trouble with them and other adfa boys.
its also the large amoutn of derros that dont go to uni that pick fights.
and that is not true that we dont socialise together on a regular basis, we have bar nights almost everythursday, and my block has a coffee night every sunday night where we can all catch up and talk about how eveyrone's week has been. we also have floow parties, and the other wee we had a big roast dinner for two floors of our block.
you havent lived in self catered, so you cant make that assumption. and im presuming you dont know anyone from adfa, so therefore you cant make the assumption about them either.

it cant be worse than all the eshays and ethnic gangs in sydney though.
Doesn't really matter, I've never gotten any troule from them but they're just annoying to have around

lol nice. im thinking of going to B&G now instead of johns or bruce, I cant afford catered...

How does the self-catered colleges work? Is there a shared kitchen which everyone uses? Can you cook at anytime or is there a specified cooking time? Also for the residential colleges do you have to share toilets and bathrooms with people or is it one bathroom and toilet per room?

Are you kidding me? I go clubbing almost every thursday this year, and last year i'd go every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and I have only seen two 'real' fights, one outside icbm, and one outside Nitro. Anything thing else isnt a fight. When two people share some words, or push each other around - that doesn't count as a fight.. A fight isn't stopped with a bouncer after 5 seconds. Lets not scare the prospective students here, canberra is much safer than any other major city syd/melb where 'real fights' occur.

People who get in fights have usually brought it on themselves. I seem to be able to avoid trouble, so i don't think it's that hard.

Don't pretend like ADFA is the innocent bystander in all of this. As far as anyone is concerned, Duntroon and ADFA have always been categorized as the same (to the general public) and they cause trouble. And if 4 of my friends who work at Mooseheads say that, then its true, because they see the bouncers throw both types of "Defence Force" out of there on a regular basis. Just because your bf, and his immediate friends are not hyper-testosterone jocks looking to spread some army love, doesnt mean all of ADFA is innocent/free from any horse-play.

Yep, take careful attention to people with mullets/rat-tails particularly if they are bleached blonde, or platted.

I stayed at B&G for a little bit last year and got the jist of it.

Each person is given a locked cupboard in the kitchen, and a locked shelf in the fridge. There is a giant communal kitchen (which is huge) and everyone is assigned an area (in B&G's case it is divided up into about 24 areas (A-X)). Each area has a stove, sink, preparation area, toasted sandwich maker, toaster etc. You can cook at any time you like, they're open 24 hours and you have swipe card access to get in the communal area. Once you've finished cooking there are seats and tables in the kitchen, or a larger dining setup in front of the foxtel tv they have.

The college has 4-5 showers and toilets for every block, and level within the residential building. This is communal.

I think you're exaggerating here. Obviously with any large campus there is going to be security issues, however dont be hysterical about this. If you're female, dont walk home by yourself at 4am when you're drunk - you're just asking for trouble. If you're concerned, anu security can escort you around campus (unisafe/brians bus/anu security car) at pretty much any time of the day/night. You just need to be smart about this and use common sense. If you have good friends, a male friend will walk you home then go back out etc.

re read my post - it says "because they eat at different times and therefore dont have to socialise together on a regular basis."
We are essentially alligned by eating times to socialise (i.e. forced to communicate and eat together lol), you can eat at any time, with or without your other friends.

Well it's nice to get a mix of opinions. Blacksunset, how would you rate anu overall?

Im guessing ADFA is Australian Defence Force academy.

ADFA (yep you got it right) is basic army training & tertiary education
Duntroon is the 'serious' army training college.

Once you've spent time at ADFA you go to Duntroon.

uni lodge has different priced rooms, but the only one with your own bathroom to yourself is the single studio (quite expensive). from what i understand, there are some colleges (i know of at least johns) that has about 6 rooms with bathrooms. But these are reserved for second years and above. The bruce hall packard wing has the same thing, but is 3rs year +.

TBH dont freak about about the sharing bathroom thing, i mean when you work it out mathmatically (there are ~65 toilets and ~320 residents in johns. There are only 5 people using the same toilet, so really thats just a large family - plus they are cleaned on a daily basis). If you are really concerned, ursies have single sex bathrooms.

You're fairly confident you'll get into Med @ USyd where they only accept 10 people each year and almost all have 99.95+ UAIs?

Good luck.

Rooms in the new college next door to Bruce will have bathrooms and a kitchen in each room. They're going to be priced at around $190 p/w self catered (so similar to how the Packard wing at Bruce is now). However, I'm not sure whether that college will be open at the start of next year or halfway through 2009.

TBH, I coped for three years sharing a bathroom, but now that I have my own I don't know what I'd do without it :).

So there's going to be a new college available next year?
Does it have a website where I can find out more info?

I'd really prefer if i had my own bathroom and kitchen.

The college is subject to planning approval from the council atm (hence why i havent mentioned it). It's going to be made from new shipping containers retro-fitted with a bathroom, kichen, bedroom etc. It will even have its own balcony.

It will be very similar to http://www.tempohousing.com/projects/keetwonen.html
(According to the student newspaper we will be getting the "professor model")
http://www.tempohousing.com/products/professor.html
i love it. Will it be available for us 08ers?
