How many words does everyone expect to be able to write in about 40 minutes? I am just wondering how long my model essays should be, realistically!
Thanks :)

i spose- depends how you look at it tho. people can write 1300-1400 words but it can be a whole load of shit.
it depends more the content of wot you write not how many words you offer the markers.
- be precise and to the point.
- dont waffle on about points coz all your doing is wasting their time and pissing them off becoz they have to wade thru 1300 words of crap just to fine the few bits that make sense.
- as long as you SHOW that you know the texts intimately (even if you dont) you will get the high marks.
- if you write a lot then make sure sure that it is worth the readers time and relates to the question.

i found a lot of answers that definitely made up the word limit but repeated the same point over and over, just stated differently, pretending to know, but only fooling themselves.

if you want a word limit then stick around 1000. dont try to go higher unless you think that the extra words are worth it. some of the exemplary answers arent very long at all, because of the amount of content and knowledge they were able to put into their answer.

1200-1400 atleast for the AOS essay. Need to write a booklet for it "just to compete." Some people fill up 2, 8 page booklets for the AOS essay.

I'm not sure exactly how many words I can write in 40 minutes, however I am quite a slow writer.
I am interested to know if you guys know of any techniques that would enable me to write faster...

Any help is greatly appreciated!!! :)
If there is a thread out there that I have failed to find please post a link

Over 1000. The best students will be getting around 1300-1400.
I wrote one full HSC booklet for my AoS essay, so that's about 800-1000 words, got 15/15 for it and my teacher doesn't mark lightly.

It really depends on what you put it, not how much you do. You should be able to get 13, 14 or 15/15 easily for the AoS as it IS by far the easiest module in english.

With one related text, my AoS essay is only around 1,050 words. I'm hoping they only ask for one related so I can spend more time on the other sections.

My trial AoS essay was 1,100 words in 45 minutes, so it's not too bad.

I consistently get 14 or 15 for the AOS essay and the most I've ever written in 40 minutes was 1200. I really think as long as you hit 1000 and it's quality, you're fine.

I go to a top 3 school and the majority of my grade is aiming for a 850-900 word count, so we'll have plenty of time to adapt to the question and add more if need be under exam conditions. Quality, not quantity guys!

Quality > Quantity. If you can write in under 1000 and its exceptionally good obviously that's better. I'd say a good target is 1000 - 1200. Be succinct and to the point in both essays and creative writing. No less than you need to answer the question, no more than necessary.

EDIT: I think I've changed my mind. All of my essays are around 900 and they're getting A's. It also gives you a lot more space to adapt to the question. As long as its extremely dense, you can get away with a lot less. Cut any sentence that doesn't directly contribute to answering the question.

Definetly quality over quantity.

My 40 minute essays are always a bit under 1000 words which fills one writing booklet. I always get 14/15 (and 19/20 for modules)

I find thats all i can write in 40 minutes. If you can write more, go for it. But it is possible to get full marks with about 1000 words. Ive seen exemplar answers with 8 pages (and some with like 16!! crazy...)

A friend of mine wrote 5 booklet pages, and around 800 words last year and got full marks.

Of course, it was VERY well written, showing that quality is more important than quantity. But quantity can help portray your quality.

Well theres a surefire way to totally stuff up everyone's structure.

That idea works well IF you actually do the essay last, and still have plenty of time.

Don't go doing a 50 minute essay up front - they are ALL WORTH EQUAL MARKS.

how do you know that you got full marks for an essay in the HSC?

Anyway, we were told that a decent response should be 1200 because that's what the top students will be writing.
