Lynn agrees to a degree. Perhaps it is Ursula's "grand narrative" style that throws Lynn off, as she is the type of reader who prefers to think along the way as opposed to having to stop and think every few chapters (which is what she had to do when she read Earthsea Quartet a few - or several - years ago). Lynn does however admire Le Guin for the construction of her novels, although on Lynn's chart, they do not rate all that highly on the readability scale.

Marcus thinks that Lynn would not have liked reading LOTR.

Justin believes that Tehanu was published in the early 90s, possibly 1992, and that her new one was released last year. He thinks that writing over years is a good thing, as an authors writing can evolve with the genre.

Amber loves LOTR, and is still a big fan, but is not sure whether she enjoyed the books or movies more. She has seen the third movies a trillion times and used it as one related text for her English powerplay

Amber also noted that, in another thread, Justin had momentarily posted up an extract from his major work. Amber was most disappointed that she had missed out, and humbly requests that she gets to have a look If Justin does not wish to show her however, Amber understands most graciously, and will not have any hard feelings if Justin refuses

Justin had posted a segment of his first draft, and will place it up again for a while. He states that although his concept may appear cliched, he believes that the rest of his work makes it more original.

Marcus thinks that the time gap between Wizard of Earthsea and Tehanu would explain, as Justin was saying, Le Guin's maturation as a writer, and the maturation of both Ged and Tenar. The genre certainly has evolved as well.

Justin suggests that if Marcus wants to see the genre at its best, that he look into Robin Hobb's books. He highly reccomends them, and instructs Marcus to start with The Farseer Trilogy, the first book in which is Assassin's Apprentice. He believes that Marcus will be blown away by the end of the first book, and that he will be wanting more by the end of the third trilogy.

Lynn did and Lynn didn't. Lynn liked a lot of it as it dealt with Elves etc which intrigued her childish fantasies (Lynn can be very childish) but admits that when she read LOTR (which was about Yr 7, Lynn read Earthsea quartet when she was ni...Yr 8?) she skimmed a lot of it as it was simply too heavy going for her. Some parts were very nice though.

However Lynn will one day talk herself into reading Tolkien and Le Guin books again... Lynn loved the LOTR movies.

Lynn admires authors that talk about a lot of heavy issues but Lynn feels that the... depth of the book can sometimes be overwhelming. For example, much of Annie Proulx's work is not going to appeal to many audiences, no matter how meaningful it is. However, making a reader stop and think by making a plot highly complex (such as in case of Le Guin's ... forgotten name of book) can be a technique in itself. Some authors can write about deep topics and score highly on Lynn's readability scale however. This is purely Lynn's opinion, and she knows and respects that some (if not all) of her friends will disagree with her.

Justin has no problem with Lynn's opinion on books, as he thinks that difference in opinion is what makes talking about them worthwhile.

Justin agrees, and explains that Craphole was only a temporary name until he thought of something better. In the later stages of composition, the name was changed to Skewiff.

Marcus has indeed already been recommended Robin Hobb, but nonetheless thanks Justin for the advice. . Robin Hobb is on his reading list. He will be reading once he finishes "Haroun and the Sea of Stories", "Goblet of Fire" and "Silence".

Amber thought that Annie Proulx was a rather enjoyable read, and feels sad that Lynn does not agree. Yet she agress that many members of her class hated it aswell, but this probably has something to do with the fact that it was set for study and not as an enjoyable read LOL.

Marcus respects Lynn's opinion on books . Marcus tends to like the more philosophical and Socratic books. This is why he likes Spec Fic, because it can dually create an emotionally fantastical world and explore essential ideas.

Lynn does like some speculative fiction - Sherri S. Temper's "Sideshow" being a good example (Lynn regrets bringing up Temper so often but it is the most "deep" fantasy book she likes, as Eddings is more entertaining than anything else), but figures that it depends on her mood. If she feels like deconstructing - no, analysing - a text, she will and can, but if she simply wants to read, well then, Lynn wants to READ. If not a spifflingly good fantasty novel, then a good historical drama like Meredith Riley or "Witch of Colonge".
