Le Guin has written a fifth book for Earthsea. So, its the Earthsea Quintet now :p

Justin will find out some time this afternoon after his exam. He is greatly anticipating the ending.

Justin quite likes Tenar's character, and much prefers her to Ahra. She's much more interesting when she's not being an arrogant little snot. :)

GUESS WHAT MARCUS THE EXACT same thing happened to Amber! Amber only got to two artists as well and ran out of time to include her third!

Amber is --> at the parallel between herself and Marcus LOL

Marcus feels a little better, because if both he and Amber couldn't finish a third artist, chances are, many others couldn't as well. *Marcus breathes*.

Lynn greets Marcus. Lynn also feels as if she should read Earthsea Quartet (and other book) now as she can remember little about it. However Lynn admits that she is not the hugest fan of Ursula le Guin as she finds her books a little too... deep for her taste. Lynn muchly prefers Sherri S. Temper, who writes beautifully in a very engaging manner with very simple and subtle motifs.

Marcus laughs, and agrees. Tenar has become pragmatic, but is still thoughtful. She has much matured. "Tombs of Atuan" is nonetheless, perhaps Marcus' favourite. He doesn't really like "The Farthest Shore". But he loves the resolution of "A Wizard of Earthsea" and "Tehanu".

Marcus doesn't remember the title, because he hasn't read the fifth book yet. He is going to go to Angus an Robertson some time, or Dymocks Online and buy it.

Justin finds that the books aren't that deep, as they are more plot based. A Wizard of Earthsea was very easy to understand, as it seemed to be a list of events, however it is true that The Farthest Shore was more complex.

Justin found the title of the book. It is called The Other Wind. Justin hopes it features Ged or Tenar, as he wasn't that fussed on Arren/Lebannen.

Amber just went and found said author, and skimmed the first few pages of A Wizard of Earthsea

Amber liked what she saw! It seemed to Amber to be similar to, yet a more sophisticated style of writing to C. S. Lewis. Is her assumption correct? If yes, then Amber is sure that she will enjoy these books and is very glad that you guys started talking about them :D (Amber thinks she will be doing a lot of reading from now on...yay!)

Incidentally, at the moment she has just finished Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, (for about the 5th time) and asks if anyone else has read it? It is a MOST excellent story :D

Le Guin wrote "A Wizard of Earthsea" as if it were a ballad or an epic.

Justin states that the books are extremely enjoyable and regrets putting off re-reading them for so long.

Marcus has most certainly heard of it, but he hasn't read it.

Justin believes such a style of writing is an essential aspect of understanding how the genre has evolved. He wishes he had reread the book earlier so he could have mentioned it in his Reflection Statement.

Lynn agrees to a degree. Perhaps it is Ursula's "grand narrative" style that throws Lynn off, as she is the type of reader who prefers to think along the way as opposed to having to stop and think every few chapters (which is what she had to do when she read Earthsea Quartet a few - or several - years ago). Lynn does however admire Le Guin for the construction of her novels, although on Lynn's chart, they do not rate all that highly on the readability scale.

Justin hopes he can get employed at Angus and Robertson, so he can get nice discounts and acquire the book. He is aware, however, that Christmas is approaching, and that his mother likes having a list of books and movies he wants. :D

Yeah, Le Guin wrote it in the 70's and 80's when works of fantasy and science fiction were coming to their fore as works of literature and Speculative Fiction. Le Guin thus marries elements of good old didactic story-telling with an essential philosophy.

(Marcus used "The Tombs of Atuan" as related material for EE1, Spec Fic)

Amber asks if Marcus is going to have a read of her MW now that they have both finished ;)

Amber also noted that, in another thread, Justin had momentarily posted up an extract from his major work. Amber was most disappointed that she had missed out, and humbly requests that she gets to have a look  If Justin does not wish to show her however, Amber understands most graciously, and will not have any hard feelings if Justin refuses :)
