Lynn wishes to put forward a dilemma to friends on Important - Please Read.

Mercedes Lackey wrote "Lammas Night" and about 10 or so of her friends have written "epilogues" to take up where the original left off. Lynn is reading her third "tale of events", and while they are all well-written, she is not sure how much she can take. Lynn really does prefer one fictional turn of events. The constant change of names and events is becoming confusing and uncomfortable to read.

Should Lynn press on, hoping to find a particularly good story that was worth the trouble of reading to get to, or just stop reading altogether?

Yes, and 'that' has an ambiguity to it, which is what Alan wanted.
Marcus agrees that that initial ambiguity fits in with the protagonists search for self-definition.

DON'T STOP READING

reading is fantastic. one should never stop reading.

The search for the perfect book remains.... my personal favourite is "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Marcus believes that Lynn should be reading because she enjoys reading. If Lynn finds that reading these stories is troubling rather than lifting her, then Marcus doesn't see the point in reading on.

AHHH!! Marcus hated Gatsby! Marcus thought that it was one long nihilistic moan! Marcus apologises if he has offended Susan.

Alan says just keep reading. It would be benificial for Lynn to be exposed to different (further) developments. But if it really agitates Lynn that much, Alan says just let laziness get in the way!

Hmm... yes, that is Lynn's dilemma...

She does enjoy the stories but cannot really take so many retellings of the one event in such a short amount of time (particularly when they all follow a similar storyline in the one setting, same characters etc)... perhaps she will try to read a bit more tommorrow.

Wow...Alan wants to read this "the great gatsby" now. Sounds interesting! (Anything that stirs debate is)

Susan laughs and says "Not at all!!"

Susan knows many people who love Gatsby and hate Gatsby. She understands :)

Lynn was never sure exactly what to think of Gatsby, and for such an overly-opinionated person, she is still unsure exactly what to make/say about it.

The Great Gatsby is thought by many to be the Great American Novel, or at least, one of them.

Lynn is very ambivalent about all of this.

Hmm... Lynn thinks Susan and Marcus are better equipped to answer this sort of question.

To Lynn, it is a bit of a love story, but ugh, Lynn is not very good at genres. It is a novel? It would be either in the "Classics" or in the same category as Michael Ondaatje et all who write books on the state and direction of mankind.

Marcus would say that the most technically perfect book is separate from Marcus' idea of the best book. "Emma" by Jane Austen is the most technically perfect novel Marcus thinks he has read, but for Marcus it is far exceeded by Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet". Marcus doesn't think that any book can be his best book. He just appreciates a book for what it is. Marcus believes that it is by appreciating many expressions that one may come to realise an essential unity.

Marcus would happily put Gatsby in the "Angst" genre, but is unsure of whether or not it would fit better in the "Melodrama" category. :p

Lynn is deeply amused by Marcus' categorisation of Great Gatsby. She senses deep hostility towards the book :p

Onto other matters, Lynn agrees that stories are wonderful and storytelling itself is a constant source of wonderment. There is so much in a story - learning, myth, hope, entertainment, fear, inspiration... the list goes on.
