Hey

For the upcoming winter session, I choose to a web-based Gen Edu GENS8003 - Work and Safety.

I just wanted to know if anyone has done it before, whats the work load and what are the assessments tasks like.

Thanks

Jo

Hi,

For a couple of COFA general edu. courses I was asked to verify enrollment but it doesn't allow me as I keep getting this message:

"Could not add an entry to the database at this time. Please try again later."

Does anyone know why?? Or I can't do that till S2 starts?

Thanks

It might, but I doubt it. GENT1301 Contemporary American Cinema. But the LIC idea sounds pretty good.

Yeah, that sounds right. Most film lectures are in 327. Thanks for that.

You can't replace your gen ed units with ANY courses... Only certain 6 uoc courses (like 6 uoc language courses). And they can't be from your faculty any since you can only do 3 uoc from Fac of Engineering.

you should do some geneds while youve got a chance to do something completely different to your degree. i did mine this semester and they were awesome.

You can substitute up to 6UOC of mainstream courses as a general education, pending approval from your program authority.

If it is approved, just remember that it excludes you from doing any more General Education Courses from that faculty.

So to summarise:
  • 12UOC of General Education
  • Maximum of 3UOC from your "home" faculty (exception is; FCE students cannot do any FCE General Education courses)
  • Maximum of 6UOC from any one faculty
  • Maximum of 6UOC can be substituted from mainstream courses (pending approval)

Mainstream courses must meet the general education objectives to be substituted. These general education objectives can be found on the Handbook, or as shown below:
Objectives of the General Education Program
- The following objectives were approved by the Council of the University in December 1994 and with some minor changes in 2005:
- To provide a learning environment in which students acquire, develop, and deploy skills of rational thought and critical analysis.
- To enable students to evaluate arguments and information.
- To empower students to systematically challenge received traditions of knowledge, beliefs and values.
- To enable students to acquire skills and competencies, including appropriate written and spoken communication skills.
- To ensure that students examine the purposes and consequences of their education and experience at University, and to foster acceptance of professional and ethical action and the social responsibility of graduates.
- To foster among students the competence and the confidence to contribute creatively and responsibly to the development of their society.
- To provide structured opportunities for students from disparate disciplines to interact cooperatively within a learning situation.
- To provide opportunities for students to explore discipline and paradigm bases other than those of their professional or major disciplinary specialisation through non-specialist courses offered in those other areas.
- To provide an environment in which students are able to experience the benefits of moving beyond the knowledge boundaries of a single discipline and explore cross and interdisciplinary connections, and cross-cultural contexts.
- To provide a learning environment and teaching methodology in which students can bring the approaches of a number of disciplines to bear on a complex problem or issue.
For your information, pretty much any languages can be substituted as general education subjects. Some subjects such as Accounting 1A have not been allowed to be substituted - and based on that precedent, expect the same in the future.
