From what I understand, if you do more than your program's requirement, they won't count, and will not be covered by HECS.
Hmm ok, thanks for that.

I think its about time we have one of these.

What restrictions are there on gen eds?
There are restrictions on what kind of gen eds you can do. Generally speaking:
  • You can only do a maximum of 3uoc of gen eds from your own faculty
  • You cannot do more than 6uoc from any other single faculty
  • Sometimes your faculty may allow you to substitute a mainstream subject for your gen eds
Says, I'm a COFA student.
I only need to do 3uoc of Geneds at COFA, do I?
Can I study the nest 5uoc with Faculty of the built environment and the rest with Faculty of Law?
I'm confused. It just doesn't sound right.

You can do 3CP from COFA if you want, but you dont have to.
Most Gen-Eds are 3CP you'll have to do four Gened subjects - ie 2 from FBE and 2 from Law

Atm I'm doing science bach, though in the suggested plan for my major, they state that you need choose 1 gen ed course worth 3 UOCs, though if I choose say another outside course - i.e JAPN1001, am I then exempt from doing a Gen ed course?

Additionally, the major that I'm heading into, states that I also need to do 12 UOCs worth of electives in addition to the core courses that I need to do...but can I choose other courses, rather than just choosing from their set list of electives?

If you do JAPN1001, you can apply for that to be part of your Gened (6UOC) - which also means you cant do any more gened from the Arts faculty

What gen ed subjects are there?
Gen ed offerings vary session to session. But there will always be gen eds offered in each session (summer, session 1, winter and session 2). You can search for gen ed subjects in myUNSW to check their avaliability for a given session, or you can check in the Virtual Handbook gen ed section
where can i find the credit points for each subject?

Just got an email about the three safety science gen-eds via web mode.

GENS8003 Work and Safety
GENS8004 Ergonomics, Productivity and Safety
GENS8005 Environmental Management in the Workplace

Has anyone done one of these? Is it worth doing one or two in winter & having less work in S2?

Thanks.

In compsci you can do a gened whenever you want

I did some in first year
I'm doing BComp/Sci, would that be classified as Undergraduate combined degree in which both degrees are not similar, hence there is no need to do Gen Eds.?

So you can't get HD's in these can you you :| Only passes and yet it still counts towards your WAM?

People with combined degees don't have to do any geneds.

Geneds are still graded like normal subjects and contribute to your WAM.

Not true, im combined and have to do 6 uoc of geneds. It depends on how similar the two degrees you're doing are.

Q:
is it true you can only do 1 GENEd course in the winter session?
but 2 in the summer?
You can do as many as you can fit. Usually you can only fit one in winter and 2 (or more) in summer.

I'm doing a combined degree, advance sci and arts. I assume I don't have to do any geneds, but as part of adv sci there'sa 3 uoc course in second semester where people would normally take a gen ed as well the like even it out 24uoc. Seeing as I dont HAVE to do them, can I choose them from any faculty (like arts or science) and can they count towards like my arts/science electives?

Does anyone here know any geneds that are easy in terms of assessment to achieve a high distinction? I need to boost my WAM slightly over the next couple of sessions and I have 6UOC for geneds.
