LMAOOO Teachers have said to do this before and I’ve never listened bc I don’t like it lol
How do I know if I already have a strong personal voice? I’m analysing texts in my own way as I usually do but I’m not sure

Should I include personal voice in my mod b essay? I’m not sure about using first person
I've heard a lot of mixed things about this and I could be wrong but I'll tell you what I've heard and what I will be doing tmr.

A teacher at my school who marks the English Adv HSC said that if the question requires a personal insight "your understanding" or something to do with "your", you should say "In my personal understanding” as it clearly shows you've engaged with the question. This is also the general consensus is at my school and what other students are doing.

Again I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on this so once again take what I say with a grain of salt but its what im going to do and its what I did in trials and did well with.

it's generally a very bad idea to use any sort of explicitly personal language in an analytical essay i fear. the quality of your analysis itself should indicate whether or not you have a strong personal voice. if your argument is clearly sustained and makes sense with the rubric and the question, as well as high quality techniques and evidence, etc, you should be fine. as a rule of thumb NEVER use any kind of i, me, my, anything like that it'll screw you over

"Audiences are positioned to reconsider / Our understanding of X is dramatically shifted by [author] / The audience is in turn pivoted to examine / [author] implies X, however, upon consideration of
we notice... "

like its just analysing it from a group perspective. Never EVER use "I" in your essays, ever ever EVER. like id pay someone not to. it kills your academic voice

I dont really know how to use this site so hopefully this works. I do agree that it makes sense to not explicitly state that your ideas are personal (as obviously thats implied, I'm the one writing the essay so ofc its personal). However its just what I've been told by my teacher who marks HSC and also I can see an argument for both sides, so I will still stick on the side of using some sort of personal language if the question is personal because I also believe it makes it easier for the marker to see that you've engaged with the question. But yeah obviously everyone has different opinions.

my understanding is that 'I' is fine, and you will read plenty of academic writing that does use I. Just don't follow it with an anecdote about a conversation you had last week with a cashier at Woolworths, you know? Using I doesn't make your writing informal, writing informally makes your writing informal.

This is a bit from a mod A essay that I specifically asked my teacher about and which she said was totally fine

...Hymne to God, in my reading of Donne’s later religious poetry, is an outlier. Its tone contrasts markedly with the pugnacious 2nd person addresses of Donne’s holy sonnets (“why swell'st thou then?”etc.), in that it is singularly introspective...

I even think this can be good, as

(a) it will set you apart from other students, and your absolute priority in advanced (I think) should be to set yourself apart. Because markers are bored shitless.

(b) it gives you a bit more credit for your original ideas. It's like a little signpost that says "I did not get this from sparknotes, or from an academic reading", which, even if subconsciously, should make your ideas a little more impressive. I think.

Having said that, another of my English teachers is always saying that the idea "it is raining outside" is not enhanced or expanded by adding "I think it is raining outside", so do not slip into tentativity when you start writing in 1st person!!

Hope this helps and good luck!!
