ok, can i ask a question to do with all this?

say for example there is a class of 5 kids. 4 of them are getting marks between 80 and 90, then one gets marks in the 50s (kid 5). come the hsc will kid 5 pull down everyone elses marks? i heard they will...

You really should read the explanatory documents on the site (scaling/uai section), luigi_000.

Yes, the fifth kid will pull the other moderated assessment marks down slightly, because he or she will lower the mean. If they are clearly an outlier, though, they may be initially excluded from the moderation process (in which case the other marks would not be pulled down). It's not clear how the Board determines whether a student is an outlier or not.

this is all provided that Kid 5 continues his/her poor form in the HSC examination itself
as 50/60's in assessment marks may be recouped if kid5 does remarkably well somehow (like 80's in the HSC exam)

With regard to the relative differences between assessment marks, I received the following email from my statistics tutor (who is a member of the Technical Committee on Scaling).

<snip>
The issue is probably the definition of "relative". If the interval over
which the marks are reported is changed then the absolute differences
will generally not be preserved but the relative differences will be
maintained (looking at the ratio of different gaps). The quote from the
Board implies that they are talking about absolute differences.

The Board provides moderated School assessments to the Technical
Committee. The Technical committee does not deal with the raw school
assessments.
<snip>

So it seems like the mark does have some importance, if not quite as much as the ranking. However, the example in the official Board document I have appears to contradict this. I've written back to him - will post with more info when I receive it.
