Cards with ancient greek pornography on them are more normal than cards with modern-day pornography on them. I saw a pack in Vietnam of those.

XD. Alrighty then Steph. How about you ask Kerry to ask Simon for that keyring back then =P
She may hit you.

Look in the explanation link-contexty-bits for good quotes. :3
(Go my explanation skills. You know, the bit where Miller talks about capitalist succubi. XD)

Good point and strangely enough you may think, less perverted I would say. It's more funny perverted if anything, like it's so illogical it's just stupid. Plus the phallic symbols on the back look like flying chickens.

I wouldn't be that mean to her. XD
How about we send someone to bash his door down OR just send some one off to Peru to buy new ones. We could then further extend all the theses we all seem to intend to write in the future.

OH so just read all the bookies we've got as we go...ok I can do that.

AND I hate MATHS...well locus...can't do it with a sore head. >.<;;;

At least we're getting subway and ice cream tomorrow!!! (then it's classics and english galore, how horrible!?)

Heh.
Well the ex-NSB person who did Greek ages ago blamed the new principal.
So don't blame us ^___^;;

Latin Ext. was yesterday. What does everyone think of this sentence:
'atque haud scio an pietate aduersus deos sublata fides etiam et societas generis humani et una excellentissima uirtus iustitia tollatur'.
That's Cicero talking about what would happen if we believed the gods didn't care about us. It was the last sentence of our unseen, and nobody really knew how to translate it. The paper was quite easy until that point.
I wrote something like:
'Having turned to the gods out of piety, I do not know whether, when trust is done away with, the society of the human race and that most excellent virtue, Justice, will be done away with at the same time'.
That seemed OK at the time, but I doubt it's 100% correct. Some of us went to the library after the exam to check a translation, but we couldn't find any, so now I'm stuck worrying about it.
Anyway, what do you think?

Sounds pretty good. :/

Forget about it until the marks get back. Worrying is stupid (and please don't write v's as u's D: )

I'll have you know that there was no 'v' in the Roman alphabet. All they had were 'u's, which could be pronounced consonantally or as vowels. If you want to turn some into 'v's, you may as well start turning consonantal 'i's into 'j's. And then you'd end up with words like 'cujus', which is just plain ugly.

Of course, if I was going to be strictly historically accurate, I'd only use capitals, and I'd leave out spaces and punctuation, so that sentence would read:
'ATQVEHAVDSCIOANPIETATEADVERSVSDEOSSVBLATAFIDESETIAMETSOCIETASGENERISHVMANIETVNAEXCELLENTISSIMAVIRTVSTOLLATVR,
which isn't much better than 'cujus' when it comes down to it really.

And yet my dictionary is perfectly happy to list v-words while it tells me Js were invented by Italian humanists in the 1600s. At least, I think it was the 1600s.

Iunno, cujus is rather cute :3

If there's no V, why'd you stick Vs throughout that?

(And also, please try to stick some kind of sugar pill in your words. >.> Typing lacks tone of voice and body language and so it's sounding reallyreally off D:. Sorry.)

To solve all problems let's make up our own alphabet and make everything conform to that...ok maybe that's a dumb idea, but still, I want to make up my own alphabet! :p

Then again I have had on occassions people thinking my handwriting looks like some foreign language which they label "greek" because they know I do Greek. Then again comments like that, as mean as this is to say, from classically illiterate/culture/language illiterate people...mostly the comments are funny but sometimes they make me cringe.

I love the comments classically illiterate people make. Priceless stuff. "What countries speak Latin?" etc. "Um well..." *headbangagainstbrickwall* <---how typical Romany etc style am I being?

The whole "u's" for "v's" pisses me off too, even if they didn't exist in the Roman alphabet...bloody Romans?

Your translation, Nicholas, of the Cicero sounds similar to the way I would have translated it now that I've looked at it.

I'm halfway through chapter 8 of Thucydides, done section 1 of Electra and a few chapters of Livy and Virgil and no extensions yet...I'm starting to think I won't get through it all with english on top of that. I might do English now to get it out of the way so I can do classics non stop the next four days or so.

...ish very worried indeed...and my memory sucks so watch me forget it. At least I learned the word for "press on" today and other stuff I don't normally remember.

Press on, eh?

Baha. I've had numbers written on my hand, and people have told me the world's coming to an end because my hand has Greek on it. *shakes head*

I've also dug up a wonderfulwonderful book called "An Intelligent Person's Guide to Classics". It has awesome philosophy information :3

I'm all for the own alphabet, by the way. I think Iris made up her own :/
Anyway, it can go with Zara's language. An alphabet for Zaralin.

O_O. Why do you say it like that? Do you want me to turn into a "manly girl" as someone called me the other day?

But yeah people wanting to press on to places and Demosthenes being a meany.

Hehehe. I have good Athenian/Spartan names for the Peloponnesian War aka Cops and Robbers/Commies and Cappies/Vietnam War game.

Demosthenes, Cleon, Nicias, Euromedon, Sophocles...OI MOI!

OOO like what!? You must bring it in!

Bahahahahaha I wonder what Zara would say to that. Then I reckon we should tell people it's like a Swahilian Alphabet or something and see if they believe us. Poor little n00bs. Being mean about Classics illiterate people is fun, sadly. XD

In capitals, the 'u' is written as a 'v'.

hey,

well obviously haven't been on this for ages...cause i have been doing trials....

Well i have english tomorrow modules..hence the procrastination...i hate modules except of course wuthering heights which is easy everything else...sucks...

Well...i wil start with....i am happy i didn't scare away everyone....

btw the cards...not the weirdest thing i have done....not that weird anyway..like steph you said that its not weird to us cause we do it all the time...plus i think i do these things more to create weird moments..life is much funner when weirdness is created...

u and v swaping also annoys me....but if they are written like that then what can we do...

BTW....Nicholas you will proabably get 100% in latin anyway..even if you did get it slightly wrong...i always think i have unseens wrong...mostly i do except in ext when everything that doesn't make sense is right......i wouldn't worry if you found the rest of the trial really easy..

I say definetly create an aphabet for Zaralin cause of course when i take over the world and brainwashing centers are implemented then we might have more fun with making them learn new languages as well and then turning into loyal subjects....and then have english/latin as our own secret language only people within my ministry will remember them...Ah yes...what a glorious time that will be...
(that reminds me must add more words to Zaralin..like think of another word for woman/women...need a new one)

Well...i should go do some english..btw steph i don't have a second realated...but i will make one up cause i watched fahrenheit 911 but it was bad...really didn't like it and i have read dead famous if worst comes to worst i will have to use one of thoes...officially hate modules...i know is said it already
now i will never be on here again...until after trials..considering i won't have anymore english only classics next week...yuk...a whole 4 days and 5 trial papers worth of classics...yeah not good...especially considering greek and ancient are on the same day...help help anyone....:burn: :bomb:

well..happy studying

lots of love:wave:

It hasn't stopped us yet Zazie!

Wuthering Heights is love, however everything else can go die...especially anything that involves Ros and Guil and Hamlet... I like Shakespeare, really I do, but not when I have to write some bloody transformation essay on it. Telling the Truth will be interesting...with my 5 minute second related text attempt. Here has been quite helpful though.

Zara, seriously, grab your Crucible, find one tiny thing get a quote and BULLSHIT. XD

But yes, when you take over the world Zara, we'll have a lot of fun with that. I can do strategy and practice while playing CIV IV...that will be oh so useful!

*patpat* Greek and Ancient is a nasty combo, but feel lucky you don't do Ext English. They weren't really nice to us at all really. I don't think our stupid sport and 'money loving' snob school really appreciates the Classics at all, or understands how hellish they are to study for, compared to some stupid TAS or other generic subject. That sounds so horrible, I regret, but it's so bloody true. They only like the Classics department when we enhance the academic reputation of the school anyway, which is slowly but surely going to hell anyway. Lucky that we get to have NOTHING to do with school anymore by the end of the year.

Pfui. Especially after today, I really hate the way our school is run and the attitudes it embodies.

Anyway, I would quote some funny things from "X-TREME Latin" in here, but I might save those for the Latin Thread. We need a Greek version I say!
Happy Trials...:bomb:

Question Time!

How loose with my translation do you think I can be!? Do you think it would be ok if I diverge slightly from the back of the book and make it mean the same thing in better english that it would be ok!?

Slight freak out right now...and this is with Thucy!

You have to be loose with your translation - there's no way you can be literal with Thucydides and still be writing English. Really, be as loose as you like. If anything, writing literary English shows that you understand the text better, and are more confident with it. The thing at the top of the page in the exam that lists the criteria says you are assessed on how you translate into fluent, idiomatic English.

Yeah that's true, Thucy sounds absolutely awful taken literally from the book...then again Thucy is awful in general! I change my translations anytime I do them, but now that I'm writing out good copies in the one place they should stay the same...

Greek Cont. was a bitch and a half and I know my Greek teacher is going to decapitate me for forgetting translations. I was so annoyed like I had done them but I couldn't think straight. ARGH I can't remember translations when I learn them it's so bad. Commentary is always boring and so are the essays...I do like unseens even though I still suck at them.

At least Latin Cont. made me happier. I remembered more than I thought and they put the translations for set translation that I actually remembered for once. The commentary was PUTTING ME TO SLEEP (as per normal), guessed most of the grammar and the Virgil unseen was a bit stuffed gramatically...otherwise I'm happy because I know I did better than in Greek.

Oh well off to CRAM for Ext Greek which I haven't started at all! Need to do that and Ext Latin tonight! Yay watch my already sinusy affected brain die on me again...oh well at least the HSC won't be as NASTY!

How have all your exams gone so far!?

Latin Ext was pretty easy, except for that sentence in the unseen. I seriously suggest you study Cicero's style. There were about three extended response questions in my exam about it, for a total of about 15 marks. I ended up writing the same thing three times.
Greek Cont. was surprisingly easy, actually. I felt really good after it...but then I had English Paper 2 in the afternoon, and after that I just felt crap again.
Latin Cont. was this morning, and I have to say it was probably the most challenging Latin exam I've done. The Livy unseen was confusing, there were a lot of bitchy grammar questions, some dumb passages for the comment questions...I'm not sure if it was actually hard or just annoying. But either way, I didn't like it.
I had English Ext. this afternoon - I really, really hate that subject. I don't know why I chose it. So, now I'm in a bad mood.

Oh terrific, extended responses on Cicero...we'll probably get more on Lucretius because we're more familiar with him (I still hate his sorry arse!). I hate extended responses and Latin Ext comment in general and my teacher's always bitching at me about it. Well it's just gay I say.

I've just finished studying the translation for Ext Greek which is in about 3 hours time...I don't know if I should study the comment or not, normally I can get by alright without doing so, but I'm not looking forward to the essay. If it's on Circe or characters I'm cool...if not I'm going to kill someone! But I have to do better than I did in Cont so that I'm not overly killed.

What did you get in your Ext Greek exam!?

Trust me I feel the same way about Ext English which is tomorrow just before Ext Lat. I haven't really studied it properly at all and it's seriously a pain in the arse and I haven't written out my ending for my creative yet which is a bitch and a half.

Otherwise now I have to go and make a significant start on Ext Latin so that I'm not up all goddamn night again...oh well only one night left of pain!

Oh and I was for some reason looking at all the texts they've had over the years for Extensions etc. I'm so annoyed that we missed Ovid's Amores by around 3 years...I'm very upset, I'd rather do that than Lucretius anyday!

Oh well thank god there's only two days left for me!

Are you done with your trials now!?

Latin wasn't all that bad really - having English Ext. afterwards just made me feel crap about everything. We're used to having really easy Latin exams, with four-line Vergil unseens, so its probably good to get some sort of challenge before the HSC.
Greek Ext. is in half an hour, and after that I've only got Ancient History tomorrow, and I'm done.

hey,

sooo glad that i am officially finished with all greek trails...yeah so excited i can almost taste freedom (even if we still have to do the pop quiz)

Officially hate..with a passion all the unseens in greek even homer which is usually soo good and easy..alas...i hate not knowing stuff ...it sucks...

Nicholas sorry to say your latin sounded really awful...besides the fact that for the first hour i didn't have the livy commentry questions...i thought the latin cont was really good...

For me the unseen was really really really good..i could actually do it...YEAH

Now all i have to do today and tommorrow is study for ext latin..oh alas and write some stupid essay...hate essay they are making my life hell.....i mean seriously..what has writing essays got to do with anything...whether i can formulate an sentance...well i can't obviously...well actually why the hell do we need to have exams at all..why does it matter what you can do or how smart you are...it shouldn't it should just be what you love to do...well i used to love classics but i am failing so then what??? ....Yeah generally i hate trials...

well...that was a little bit of a rant...sorry

I can't believe we missed out on ovid...damn...that would have at least been more entertaining than Lucretius..oh well...i do like some aspecs of lucretius...the unseens.....
