 what do u think the best chemistry resources are for HSC?
i'm confused on whether to use macquarie or excell revision guides... they're pretty much the same i reckon...
what about text books? my skool uses contexts... but ive got the old conquering at home and it seems more clear and to the point...

what chem books do u guys use (or have heard about)?

I found Conquering Chemistry to be quite good. Excel wasn't that great.

Chemistry Contexts, it's got 2 books for prelim & hsc course, i find it better than conquering chemistry, the language is simple enough to make the already complicated concepts etc more understandable

Re: Best Chemistry Textbooks/Guides?

I've got to say that Excel is the best Chemistry textbook I've ever used.

Nah nah, Just kidding. Go with Conquering Chemistry, it's a great textbook for the HSC. Just make sure you cross-check what's in the syllabus and what's in the textbook because some of the older editions of Conquering Chemistry goes into too much detail for the amended syllabus.

Re: Best Chemistry Textbooks/Guides?

I found that prelim excel chemistry wasn't that good lol. The way it was set out didnt go with me.

However, the TEXTBOOK that your teacher gives you should be MORE THAN ENOUGH. Because the teachers are going to give you the good ones(only if your school isnt cheap). All the other text book is doing is just conferming the work in the other book lol.

The best resource i found was GOOGLE. Type in your question or dot point and you have explanations lol.

Chemistry Spotlight is good too. My cousin bought both the prelim and HSC herself, and my teacher at school sometimes photocopies parts of it for us. It explains some syllabus points quite well :)

Actually excel prelim ext math got me through permutations and combination (that's also coz our text books had nothing on perms and combos)...l really luved the worked answers!

For chemistry I really like the KISS notes. PLZ PLZ if anyone knows the ISBN number or even the publisher please let me know coz I REALLY REALLY wanna but a set for myself in chem and phys. Thanks :)

Re: Best Chemistry Textbooks/Guides?

conquering chemistry edition 4, chemistry contexts 2 and macquarie chemistry hsc study guide are the best combinations, and don't question about it again.
However i have heard that contexts is too detailed and so i am using chemistry pathways hsc as my supplement which has excellent information all directly relevant to the syllabus - it's only $25 from www.macmillan.com.au if u order it online.

Re: Best Chemistry Textbooks/Guides?

Contexts is good for extra reading; it contains alot of rambling info that isn't essential to know for the HSC but is still interesting.

Re: Best Chemistry Textbooks/Guides?

Howdy there, I'm also looking at chem textbooks to buy =).

I've tracked down the Conquering Chemistry (4th Edition) textbook but regarding the Macquarie Revision Guide...is there a specific edition I have to get? Or is it just the 2003 edition...?

Also, with the Chemistry Contexts 2 book, do I get the 2nd Edition?

Thanks for any help, just looking to make sure I get the right editions..:)

P.S. --> for anyone thats doing/did Ancient History or PD/H/PE, did you find that you needed any textbooks to supplement what the teachers gave you? Or was it enough..? Cos I found for Yr11 the stuff they gave us was pretty sufficient, just wondered if it was the same for the HSC course.

I'm pretty sure that the 2nd edition is still the latest edition out so far. :)
