It's Obama's policy... It's silly to imagine that he'll just withdraw no matter what happens against the advice of all the commanders on the ground .
Obama's policy on the matter is sensible. Barring no major escalations, withdraw from Iraq over 2 years, leave a peace-keeper crew, and focus on rebuilding Afghanistan and fighting the Pakistan-backed Taliban.

Obama ridiculed Bush for not entering Pakistan to stop the Taliban in 2006 (at the Pakistani government's behest).

For all we know al qaeda is finished as an organisation, but this is irrelevant to the clear security concerns. You never give in. Never never never in nothing great or small, large or petty. Never yeild to terrorists, never yeild to the apparent almighty cost of victory
How does it make sense to pull out when the enemy behind 9/11 is apparently swelling with angry numbers?
Man you really buy into that stuff, doncha?

Well then, you should be aware that the Taliban are based in Pakistan and came from Afghanistan. Iraq was not about the Taliban, so you're kind of confusing your wars.

Well it does make sense when you look at why Bin Laden attacked on 9/11. Because of American support for Israel and the fact that there are military bases in Saudi Arabia. It's not necessarily giving into terrorism when you do a cost/benefit analysis of the situation and decide that it's more worthwhile in the long term to GTFO.

Lets not even get into the differences between Sunnis and Shias. Alex, you're showing a very us v them analysis of the Iraqi situation and I think it's detrimental to your argument.

McCain's policy isn't necessarily any different other than that he won't set a timetable, but then again all Obama seems to be doing is setting an aspirational timetable anyway.

I definitely agree with the rest of what you said.

So why then should we be in Iraq? Al-Qeada activity increased when we split our forces between Afghanistan and Iraq.

I hate to sound like a member of the Socialist Alternative, but the Iraqi Parliament wants the US out. The Iraqi parliament have set a timeline and the US have not committed to it under the Bush administration.

This is a shambles of a war, but I understand the commitment to the situation, as they should have to clean up the mess they've caused. You can't just run in, kick over a few statues and then piss off to leave the situation to dissolve into a pogrom.

Re: Barrack OBama or John Mccain?

We should be in Iraq because there is every chance that it will turn into another Afghanistan after the Soviet's surrendered. You think it's sufficient to "HOPE" they'll take it the right way and be grateful that we destroyed their country, tortured and killed their countrymen, then promptly left for political reasons? Leaving NOW will be bad for the Iraqis themselves, for Israel, for oil prices, for American power, and for global security

The only real plan to fix the Sectarian violence and overcome the continuing slaughter and extremification of the populous is to invest heavily in infrastructure, stimulate the economy so that trading becomes more important than sectarian clashes and invest heavily in education.

I've always been uneasy about a withdrawl at this stage, but I think my general unease comes from the US' management of the war. No-bid contracts, torture, contractors that are immune from prosecution, I mean who do they think they are? The UN?

Iraq is not like Soviet Afghanistan, and nobody is suggesting we abandon them to the dogs. :)
