A collection of HSC Advice: What *not* to do

Even if you can't, harder geometry Q's rarely make up a significant portion of the exam, so those who rote learned it aren't affected much (4U HSC paper this year had no circle geometry).

A collection of HSC Advice: What *not* to do

In maths (especially 4U), since it scales so well, you don't need a great raw mark to get an E4, and these raw marks actually are attainable by mostly rote learning, which for maths basically means doing tons of past papers so that you've pretty much 'memorised' how to do certain Q's, since a...

Worried about some motors and generators stuff

There was also an infamous MCQ in a past HSC involving dropping a magnet down three tubes, and you had to assume no Eddy currents formed in the one with the slits to get the Board's answer. If you assumed what happens in reality (that small Eddy currents are formed), you would get an answer that...

    Mathematical Induction in the HSC

Lol I was thinking of telling him it's spelt 'integer', but didn't think it'd actually result in loss of marks, so refrained.

    Acceleration in terms of x

    $Using the trigonometric identity $\cos ^2 \theta = \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2}\cos 2\theta$, we have$ $$\begin{align*}x &= \cos^2 3t \\ \Rightarrow x&= \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2} \cos 6t \\ \Rightarrow x-\frac{1}{2} &= \frac{1}{2}\cos 6t. \end{align*}$$ $This is of the form $x-x_0 = A\cos nt +...

    HSC Physics Marathon 2013-2015 Archive

re: HSC Physics Marathon Archive $The $F$ is just converting the increase in mass-reading into the equivalent weight force that caused it, which is $mg = g\times m = 9.8 \times 7.5 \times 10^{-4}\text{ N}$ (I think there's a typo in the solution, they wrote $7$ instead of $7.5$).$

    HSC Physics Marathon 2013-2015 Archive

re: HSC Physics Marathon Archive They don't get too hard generally. Try the Q.27 of 2012 HSC Physics paper (Page 23 here: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc_exams/hsc2012exams/pdf_doc/2012-hsc-exam-physics.pdf ), that's about as hard as they tend to be in HSC Physics.

    HSC Physics Marathon 2013-2015 Archive

re: HSC Physics Marathon Archive It's in the Option "Quanta to Quarks". In this Option need to know about Pauli and Heisenberg's contribution to the development of quantum theory. If you didn't do this Option, you don't need to know about it.

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon $Yeah, if $k\geq 4$, then clearly $k^2 + 3k \geq 4^2 + 3\times 4 >0$, and $2^{k+3}$ is positive always, so that product in the last line is positive, and thus that inequality in the last line holds.$

    1) Yes, or they'll give you the formula; you aren't expected to be able to derive it. 2) Yes. 3) & 4) I think they are allowed (unless they say "hence" or something).

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level Since 2016'ers probably have just started complex numbers recently, relatively easy Q to start off: $Let $z$ and $w$ be complex numbers. Show that $\left|z-w \right| \geqslant \Big{|}|z|-|w| \Big{|}$. What is the geometric interpretation?$

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level I remember the 2014 HSC 4U Advanced marathon was allowed to continue for a couple of years. Why not the 2015 one (or why did the 2014 one have to stop)? (Though the 2015 one probably wasn't as good or vibrant as the 2014 one, so it wouldn't be as fun...

For the purposes of HSC Physics, no. In reality, yes. So if asked in the HSC, you should probably say no.
