Lol so that's what Pol did. Never knew (used to think it stood for "Polynomial" a long time ago haha).

Population of medicine hopefuls in across Australia

$I doubt 50,000 each year, I think $\sim 20,000$ sit the UMAT each year in the first place. UNSW's Medicine site says last year, over 3500 people applied for it, but I doubt it was in the 5000's, probably less than 4000, otherwise they would have said 4000+. These numbers (like 5000 etc.)...

    Atar

Oh yeah, I think you're right. It just says you need to satisfactorily complete 10 units of ATAR courses, which must include 4 subjects. So you can just screw up the SOR and it doesn't need to count, provided that you meet the criteria for "satisfactorily complete".

What do you mean by 'reason' (like, reason for what?)? I thought you initially asked for the reason he disrespected people who do General Maths, so I thought the reason for that was that he assumed people doing General Maths are all stupid (evinced in the quote I gave). The quote you gave is...

    2015ers Chit-Chat Thread

It was kind of implied in this quote by him: "He told me he did general maths. At this point I was trying my hardest not to burst out laughing but then I realized it's not his fault he's dumb…" (Somehow this quote seems a bit like an English quote lol.)

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level The base case would be n = 3 lol. So the whole proof is an exercise for the reader. :P

Clarification on molar heat of combustion

The heat liberated in an exothermic reaction is a positive amount, since heat is indeed liberated to the surroundings. If heat liberated were negative, that'd imply that actually heat was being taken in from the surroundings (endothermic).

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level And by the way, since the man (I think it was a man, forgot the name) is acting rationally, the answer depends on the man's knowledge of the whether the days' temperatures are fixed or not, right? If he thinks they are fixed, it matters not to the...

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level Lol idk, maybe this is the new Monty Hall haha. I have a feeling that before Day 1, the chance that Day 1 is hottest is 1/4, but once you know Day 1's temperature on Day 1, it changes to 1/8?? Or maybe this is a problem with having the infinite...

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level I did 1 minus the probability that all 3 of the next days are colder than Day 1 (given that it is Day 1 currently). Is this the wrong way to calculate that probability?

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level $But couldn't he also say that given the first day's temperature, he knows the probability that one of the next three days is hotter than Day 1 is $1-\left(\frac{1}{2} \right)^3 = 0.875>0.5$, so he should always \textsl{not} pick Day 1? (Haven't...

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level Yeah but wouldn't it need to have a finite max. (and min.) temp.? A uniform distribution on an infinite support doesn't make sense. I guess you essentially mean that whatever the temperature is on a day, the next day's one (or any other day's one) is...

Re: HSC 2016 4U Marathon - Advanced Level $Can we assume that $T_1,T_2,T_3,T_4$ are identically distributed (so they are i.i.d., since we're told they're independent), where $T_i$ is the temperature of day $i$ in Celsius, for $i=1,2,3,4$? Because otherwise, the answer would depend on the...

Proposed changes to the Mathematics syllabus: Thoughts?

Since this is a maths course, the focus of matrices should probably not be on the practical / "real-world" applications, but rather on the mathematics (unless they decided to open two strands – Pure and Applied; but this is another discussion) (and besides, one can't focus on advanced...
