Re: Mistakes from Text Book Thread Since we just want the slope of the tangent, we don't need to figure out the entire equation of the tangent. We can just sub. the x-value into the equation for dy/dx to get the slope.

According to http://www.atarcalculator.com.au, a 99 in 2U is a 99.95 ATAR Equivalent. Also according to that Calculator, the a mark of ~95 is the lowest 4U HSC Mark that also gets 99.95 ATAR Equivalent, whilst the lowest such mark for 2U is 98. A HSC Mark of 97 in 2U is 99.75 ATAR Equivalent...

Yeah they consider your final HSC Mark. Last year last state rank for HSC Economics was 96 HSC Mark. I think 96 has achieved HSC Business Studies state rank in the past too, but not too sure.

    major scare

Matrix's ATAR Calculator says 51.95 ATAR. EDIT: Wait, I think this is because Matrix's ATAR Calculator doesn't have data for Info Tech. So that prediction is probably lower than what it should be. The ATAR calculator at http://www.atarcalculator.com.au doesn't have data for Info Tech. either.

Ranking first is both under and over rated

If you're outright first internally, as far as I'm aware it should be irrelevant that second place was a tied ranking.

Ranking first is both under and over rated

Were you outright first for History internally? Because if so, you should have received your cohort's highest Examination Mark (which is at least 47) as your Assessment Mark, shouldn't you?

    Marks Q

It depends on how your subjects scale. From UAC: "Courses dominated by high‐achieving students, who do well in all their subjects, will be scaled positively. Courses with many students who do not perform well in all their subjects will be scaled negatively." Source...

Whatever happens tomorrow won't change your life

$\noindent For some people, ATAR in 80's $\Rightarrow$ messed up fairly badly. Since ``messed up'' is a subjective term, the ATAR range that would cause someone to say they ``messed up'' will clearly vary from person to person (so some people's such ATAR range may not agree with yours).$

    First in Course List

Given that these are state-toppers, if they're Prelim. accelerants, they may just be so beast/smart that they did well in Prelim. subjects too.

Alternatively (if they were Prelim.), they might have aced it and Prelim., which is possible to do.

How to find out your overall rank in the state for a subject

Maybe -- but did you "like" English etc.? It's possible to do well in subjects and not like them, or like them despite not doing too well in them. Edit: realised you weren't talking about yourself. Haha

Re: Mistakes from Text Book Thread $\noindent Your expression for $\frac{\mathrm{d}y}{\mathrm{d}x}$ is incorrect due to a silly mistake on your part. We can easily see that it's incorrect because the function $y(x)$ is a fourth-degree polynomial, so $y^\prime (x)$ should be a third-degree...

    Scaled marks or raw marks?

Yeah it seems to be the most natural phrase to use when you want to refer to adjusting of marks without caring about which process is actually at play.

    Scaled marks or raw marks?

I think when most people ask "scaled or raw?", by "scaled", they just refer to "something has been done to our raw marks". Most people don't know or care what the actual terms or procedures are, they just use "scale" to refer to a generic process meaning non-raw (i.e. adjusted).
