    Complex Numbers Question

    Umm...something a little different: 1 + Cos 2a + i Sin 2a = (1 + Cos 2a) + i Sin 2a = (1 + 2Cos^2 a - 1) + 2i Sin a Cos a = 2 Cos^2 a + 2i Sin a Cos a= 2Cos a (Cos a + i Sin a) = R Cis a, where R = modulus and a = argument. So 1 + Cos 2a + i Sin 2a = 2 Cosa (Cos a + i Sin a), modulus = 2 Cos...

    Maths help

    Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. The rectangular prism is made of steel, so it doesn't require the minimum surface area, it requires the minimum sum of side lengths. Let S = sum of side lengths. S = 4(3x + x + h) = 4(4x + 1458/x^2) S' = 4(4 - 2916/x^3) For S' = 0, x^3 = 2916/4 = 729, x = 9. You can...

    How did you go?

    I got A. Concentration of oxygen was 8mg/L, but there was a 10L sample, so 80mg/10L. n = mass/molar mass = volume/molar volume. Volume = molar volume x mass/molar mass = 24.79 x 0.08/32 = 0.062L = 62 mL. Answer is A. I hope.

    Extension 2 dance

My apologies to all the dance people here. Maths people can be incredibly arrogant. And I'm a maths person.

Textbooks - Only in Uni Libraries?

Ok, so I've just finished the extension 2 maths course and am interested in doing more maths. I've only just finished year 11 and don't feel like leaving maths for a whole year. Are the higher level (ie. university) mathematics textbooks only available in university bookshops, or can they be...

    Circle Geometry Question

There's always university maths. Though I wonder how boring life gets once you finish your PhD.

    Complex

I think for the early questions, markers don't care much about working out as long as you give them the answer. Not for the simple questions, anyway.

    Circle Geometry Question

I'd swap 10 units of maths for my HSC subjects anyway, so I sure don't blame you for asking even though the exam is over :p

    Circle Geometry Question

    Angle EBC + Angle CDE = 180 (opposite angles are supplementary in a cyclic quadrilateral) Angle ABE = 90 (subtended by diameter AE) ABE + EBC + CDE = 180 + 90 = 270. But ABE + EBC = ABC. So ABC + CDE = 270.

You mean coefficients must be real, not integral? Or am I mistaken?

How Pedantic are the markers with fructose

Well I don't do this option, but I'm pretty sure it's because there's a bond between the 2 carbon atoms, and no bond between the carbon and hydrogen (in the hydroxyle group). Writing it that way just shows the marker you know which atoms are bonded together.

Would you reccomend doing maths extension 2?

Well I'm obviously not saying it's impossible to do well, but something 'kicked in' for the OP and he ended up with 60% in mathematics extension 1. How much effort then would it require to get an E4 in extension 1, and even moreso in extension 2? And please tell me, the people who repeated 3U...
