    ANU Chatter Thread

Re: ANU 2011 Semester 1 Chatter Thread I'm probably not the right person to ask about that, since I did Analysis I in first year. Had no idea what was going on the whole time but somehow scraped an 85. i actually did a bit of prep for Analysis II & III before I started them (i.e. googling some...

    ANU Chatter Thread

Re: ANU 2011 Semester 1 Chatter Thread Hah, I'm tutoring that. Never did MATH3511, but I have done every single pure maths course at ANU, and then some.

    2010 Semester 1 Chatter Thread

For you, maybe. I have to spend 12+ hours on Monday and Tuesday marking the exams

    Master of Mathematical Science

The coursework one is much easier to get into than the research one (at least in maths) - they don't expect you to have done honours, or if you have done honours they certainly don't require first class or upper second class honours.

    NO accommodation

Sorry, late reply. I've heard something from my friends about a bunch of first years at Toad who'll be having meals and joining social activities at Bruce, so that could be you. Haven't had it confirmed though. Oh and I spoke to the (acting) Dean of Bruce today. Apparently 420 people had...

    living costs

Unipub seem to have a similar deal for Thursday nights. Bear in mind though that Mooseheads, ICBM, Shooters etc are all pretty disgusting places (but nevertheless you'll spend nearly every Thursday night there in first year :P). If you're a bit more indie try hitting up Rev (Bar32) on a Friday...

    NEW BRUCIES (Bruce Hall ANU)

This is the floorplan for a normal room So there's a pretty decent wardrobe with cupboards above it, a sink with a mirror with cupboards for toiletries etc above it and bigger cupboards underneath it, a drawer in the desk and cupboards above it, and space underneath your bed.

? Lay-teck, not lay-tech (the x is supposed to be the greek letter chi).

    2010 Fields Medal

Pretty awesome - it's got a great pure maths faculty (especially for analysis). Plus doing the PhB degree means you get to do graduate level stuff in an undergraduate degree, which is pretty sweet.

    2010 Fields Medal

Considering there's an 18 page article out there just describing the Fundamental Lemma, I'd say it's pretty tough to understand (I only really have any understanding of the SL_2 case, which is pretty basic). It's hard to keep up with the maths of the "contenders" too because there are so many...

    First year maths

So does Victoria (to a very limited extent) and NT. Not sure about the other states. It's always funny seeing the NSW kids own the calculus bit and flunk the linear algebra. But yeah, just to reiterate what everyone else said, do MATH1013 unless you really want to test yourself for some unknown...

    2010 Fields Medal

I think it'd be hard to overlook Ben Green again, especially if his forthcoming paper with Terry Tao on the prime k-tuples conjecture is as good as it sounds.

    places in PhB

I'd still definitely recommend it. When I started, I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do; all I knew was that I was pretty good at maths and physics in high school. Now I'm about to start my honours year in mathematics, and afterwards I'm pretty certain I'll go on to do a PhD somewhere. I don't...

    places in PhB

As jas0nt said, you have to put a fair bit of effort in to keep up an 80 average, but if you get a 99 ATAR then you're clearly intelligent enough to do so. For your second question, if you have any achievements whatsoever then put them down. I put down stuff like getting HDs in the Westpac...

    places in PhB

I think about 40-50 people are offered a spot, and about 30 accept it. (By honours year though it's dropped down to about 20, from people who got kicked out for not getting good enough grades or changed degrees or something.)
