Who is doing a Science-related course @ UNSW next year?

I was thinking of doing a Bachelor of Advanced Science next year majoring in Pure Maths and Physics maybe, but like you said, I really have no idea what kinds of jobs are available. One more exam left and I still don't know what I want to do at uni....

    Stupidest Thing I've Ever Done!

You haven't been writing them down? Bloody hell... you need to be tortured like the rest of us. Lets do a few calculations: English Paper 1: 3 Booklets for me, 15 pages all up, plus covers. That makes 18*[3 digits (centre number) + 8 digits (student number)] English paper 2: 24*11...

    Question from 2002 HSC

I'd imagine a lot of people got this wrong basically from being tricked and using the push rule in the direction of motion.

    Question from 2002 HSC

Remember that the rod is moving up, and it is a conductor moving in a magnetic field, so it will experience a force. Lenz's law states that the force acting on a conductor moving through a magnetic field will be in the opposite direction to it's original motion, and the motion is up so the...

    i got 1(c) wrong

Don't bother going over the test finding out what marks you got right/wrong. Fight the temptation, because really, whatever happens with your marks is out of your control and you can only get depressed by going and picking out all of the mistakes you made.

    how did the 4Uers go?

I stuffed up.... Was breezing through the whole paper thinking "this is sweet, I'm up to question 4 and I've got an hour left." I wasn't rushing everything, simply because I believed that there were only 6 questions..... Serves me right for doing shit all study, no practise exams or anything. I...

Yeah, you might want to clarify the difference before tomorrow ;)

    Loan Repayments

I realised today that I didn't know jack shit about loan repayments or time payments, then read over it and picked it up pretty quickly. Don't panic about it, it's relatively easy stuff, and there isn't much variation between the types of questions they can give either.

    General Parametric Equations

They won't give you a question in a big block like that, chances are they'll put it in parts, like (i) could be find the equation of the normals, (ii) could be find their intersection point, (iii) could be given a bit of info, find the locus of the intersection. P.S, a reminder that it is a...

    2002 q4 (a) (i) and (ii)

7 people sitted at a round table, which can be done 6! ways. 2 people refuse to sit to each other. The number of ways that they can sit next to each other is 2!5! = 240 :. the number of ways that they can't sit to each other is 6! - 2!5! = 720 - 240 = 480

    2002 q4 (a) (i) and (ii)

    I got 480....

    General Parametric Equations

P.S. Don't try to do this question, it was just something I made up on the spot and since the normal through P is a fixed line the locus of the intersection is obviously the the fixed line. As such, it shouldn't be taken seriously ;)

    General Parametric Equations

You would find the point of intersection of the two normals, using simultaneous equations. The points would include ps and qs in them, and you don't want that if you are trying to get the locus. You would then substitute the point (0,a) into the equation of the normal through P, and get an...

    1995 HSC Q5b iii.

Ok, for the prize to reach $200 000 before anyone wins, no one can win until it reaches this mark. The probability of no one winning in any one game is (1 - 0.015). The prize starts at $8000, and increases by $8000 each time someone loses. Therefore there must be 25 losses in a row for the prize...

    General Parametric Equations

They're the words I am looking for :) Ok, so if I were to say to you, P(2ap,ap2) and Q(2aq,aq2) are two points on the parabola x2 = 4ay, find the locus of the path traced by the intersecting normals corresponding to each point if the normal at P goes through...

Do you know how to find locuses? EDIT: loci, even?

    1995 HSC Q5b iii.

You'll find that no one will point out any mistakes because there are no mistakes. I'm sure if you were asked that question in the exam that would be the solution that the markers would expect, and if anyone did anything more it would just be a waste of time.

    limits

I'm not going to bother trying :P We have the 3-unit test tomorrow and I am only attempting things that could be in the exam. The chances of a chestion like that being in the exam are very slight.

    1995 HSC Q5b iii.

Err.... there is a much simpler way to do it than that..... The probability of anyone winning is 0.015, so the probability of no one winning is (1 - 0.015). When someone wins, the prize is increased by $8000. The initial prize is $8000, so it must increase by $8000 another 24 times to reach...

    limits

If the highest power is in the numerator you can use either partial fractions (if you do 4-unit) or long division to simplify it down to an expression where the highest power is not on the numerator.
