    HSC 2015 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon That actually makes a lot of sense in terms of my diagram. Your triangle inequality in line 2 will turn into an equality when z lies on the real axis (outside -2 and 2), and that is where the points of maximum modulus were located.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon That Geogebra sketch was just for me to get a visual on whether the answers offered so far are correct. I still haven't attempted the question, so I can't rule out the possibility that there is another way to do the question without knowing that locus.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon A Geogebra sketch tells me that the locus defined by that equation is a pair of ellipses centred at the origin whose major axes are perpendicular to each other, and that the approximate answer is 8.47 I haven't done the algebra, so I don't know the exact answer.

Ranking if you're the only one in the class

As you seem to know absolutely nothing about the process, how about going to the BOSTES site and doing a bit of reading: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc/ (Who feeds people this crap about rankings?)

How long would it take the investment to double in value?

You might want to correct this line.

Do these happen in HSC maths marking?

If you cross out a solution, but do not offer an alternative solution, they will mark your crossed out solution (if they can read it). If you have one crossed out solution and one which is not crossed out, they will mark the one that is not crossed out (they WON'T try to find extra marks for...

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon Just checking .... because it is a LONG LONG time since I've done this, but is this the expected value of a binomial distribution?

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon Not sure, but does this question assume that 0 <= p <= 1 ? (I can see it easily for those values, but I haven't really considered values outside that range yet.)

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon Assuming you are using the Cambridge formula for Tn: For T13 to be the greatest term, you need T13/T12 to be GREATER than 1, giving a>39/8 BUT you also need T13/T14 >1, giving a<6 So the solution is 39/8 < a < 6 (or 'less than or equal' if you allow for equal...

Chances of 3-unit being counted in 10 best units for HSC?

The question means little as it stands. The two BEST units of English PLUS the next BEST 8 units count. How could that be answered when no-one knows how you will perform in those subjects?

Chances of 3-unit being counted in 10 best units for HSC?

Actually, that is not correct. It is merely the way the statistics are reported for the sake of consistency. In any case, it makes no difference whether the marks are doubled or halved.

Chances of 3-unit being counted in 10 best units for HSC?

If you achieve the 76th percentile in Ext 1 (ie. you are beaten by 24% of the state) you will get an ATAR contribution which, if repeated in every subject, would get you an ATAR of 99. For Ext 2, it is the 54th percentile which gets you 99.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon It actually doesn't make any difference whether it's bx, bc, pi, or 3+7i
  16. B

What you need for a 99 atar (for asian subjects)

Actually, yes you can ... and you do. You only get reported the nearest whole number. But people with exactly the same marks can get different ATARs due to rounding.

Avoiding the regrets and disapointment of not being able to pick up 3U/4U Maths

I want to make sure that everyone realises that you must get permission from your school principal to study externally a course that is already offered at your school. (That is, if you want it to count towards your HSC)

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon Just to explain the concept further: You could have filled the remaining 14 spots using any grouping you wanted, and the answer would have been the same. So, say you wanted to first fill 3 particular spots, then fill another 6 particular spots, then fill the last 5...
