    Special Relativity and Michelson-Morley Experiment

It most definitely disproved the existence of the ether. Although many scientists tried to talk themselves around that inevitability for a number of years afterwards.

Features of Aether Model (HSC Q)

I think everyone missed the key word ... MODEL. The issue is that you are supposed to discuss the model, not specifically the ether. (And do they honestly still spell it 'aether' in the syllabus?)

HSC 2015 MX2 Integration Marathon (archive)

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon I just want to make sure everyone realises that in an exam you can't just quote the formula you have used. The result would have to be derived.

    Questions about ATAR

    Approximately (these are based on an earlier year's stats): 99.95 (477) 99.5 (456) 99 (446) 98 (432) 95 (404) 90 (371) 85 (345) 80 (319) I'll let you interpolate between those figures.

    Implicit D

I am quoting people who went to the 2013 HSC Examiner's day (not sure if its called that, and not 100% sure I have the right year). The head examiners tell attendees how the question that they were responsible for was marked. As I wasn't there, I'm not sure how much detail they went into, but...

    Implicit D

Adding to that, examiners don't like students using concepts from beyond the Ext 2 syllabus. For example, they won't pay L'Hospital's rule (which many people learn at tutoring) unless it comes with a full explanation of how it works and why it is applicable to use in that particular question.

    HSC 2015 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon Nevertheless, that is the invalid step for the other reason I stated. The number of terms cannot depend on x.

    HSC 2015 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon We could also try to differentiate x² by writing it as 1+1+1+...+1 (x² times), giving an answer of zero. When we do this, we are using x² only as a counter of terms, and not a contributor in its own right to the rate of change. So the error is in splitting the...

Let me guess ... the year 12 dux dobbed him in?

    Quick Probability Question

In multiplying 14/15 by 4/5, you are assuming he gets an ace once in every 15 serves THAT HE GETS IN, not once in EVERY 15 serves as stated.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon Extra challenge: As resistance is a non-conservative force (since it is dependent on velocity and not position), only reducing the total energy of the body, at any point in its downward path it must have less kinetic energy and hence less speed than at that point in...

HSC 2015 MX2 Integration Marathon (archive)

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon No doubt, for many people it will. But most people here seem to have almost perfected the techniques already. Not that more practice won't help, but it seems that integration gets a disproportionate amount of attention. And as I said ... I really don't...

HSC 2015 MX2 Integration Marathon (archive)

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon I've always wondered with this integration thread ... the questions asked are far above anything asked in an HSC exam, and seem to be based on a love of mindless algebra. If the aim is to maximise the HSC mark, and everyone has clearly mastered HSC level...

Intersection of Forward and Inverse Function

A function and its inverse don't have to intersect on y=x or on y=-x.

I'm pretty sure everyone would give the same answer to both questions.

HSC 2015 MX2 Integration Marathon (archive)

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon You need the derivative of sinx in the integral to do that. Also, you have the integration symbol in your working after you've integrated. And ... which 'formula sheet' gives the integral when x^2 has a coefficient?

    Does God exist?

I'm afraid I'm missing your point. You seem to be saying that you are glad that the question is irrelevant to non-believers. (Both questions in your post are the same)

    Does God exist?

Great to see the NOs have taken a double-digit lead. Given that most of you are young, the future is looking up. I wonder what the result would be if the question had asked "do you practise a religion?" (ie, by attending church and setting aside time each day for praying). Given that in 2012...
