Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon Inverse tan and sine are both odd functions. So (ignoring all the extraneous rubbish): 2/sin(-α) times arctan sin(-α) = ....... ?

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon Don't worry ... it still works for both cases. But not considering that is one mark off in an exam! ... unless there is another method which bypasses the issue.

Re: MX2 2015 Integration Marathon I hope people considered two cases ...... because of course √(1-cos²α) does not equal sinα.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon - Advanced Level I was hoping that the partial solution which I posted only an hour earlier would have prompted someone to join in before your final solution was posted.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon - Advanced Level A start on this question: Replace each of the nine integers with their value mod 5. So the possible values are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 Case I: All nine integers have the same value Take any five of the integers - we must get a sum which is a multiple of 5...

Sorry, I haven't been well, and only just noticed this. I'll try to absorb it when my brain is functioning again.

    Hyperbolic Paraboloid

Can it be shown algebraicly (ie. without calculus) that a hyperbolic paraboloid is doubly ruled? I mean ... using 'high school standard' algebra.

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon You can easily rotate about oblique lines. But creating a solid by rotating about a curve is pretty meaningless. Assuming you want to take slices perpendicular to the 'axis' of revolution, these slices won't be parallel, so they'll crash into each other. It's like...

    HSC 2015 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 4U Marathon It is really only meaningful to rotate a graph about a point in 2 dimensions, or about a straight line in three dimensions. Pointwise rotation of one curve about another curve will distort the shape of the first curve. Even then, the idea only carries meaning if every...

    Doing Extension 2 in prelim

My main point is that if there has to be tutoring, then the rules for tutors should be the same as the rules for teachers. Otherwise, what is the point of having rules for teachers? Tutors should not be permitted to start a course early, they should be forced to get Working with Children...

    Doing Extension 2 in prelim

Why would they be rendered useless? What is wrong with teachers teaching the concepts first and tutors reinforcing them, instead of the other way around? And .... by saying that you are pretty much implying that schools have been rendered useless by these rules. My experience is that most...

    Doing Extension 2 in prelim

Why should someone less talented be able to get better results than someone more able just because they have thousands of dollars to fork out? But ... that wasn't the point I was making ... I was simply saying that if we have to have tutors, then they should be made to follow the same rules...

    Doing Extension 2 in prelim

What I don't understand is why schools are not permitted to begin Ext 2 until term 4, yet private tutors can start any time. Apparently a level playing field is required ..... unless you are willing to pay to get an advantage. The tutoring industry needs to be regulated.
