    Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon I'm pretty sure your only mistake was in miscounting the number of doubles. As long as there is at least one single letter, you just fix that letter, then arrange the others around it. That is arrange 10 letters containing 3 doubles, so 10! / (2!)^3...

    Re: Harder HSC Papers I honestly don't think P(0,0) is meaningful. I can see why it could be equal to zero as much as why it could be equal to one (though I don't think I can put it into words). I see it in kind of a similar way to 0^0 being undefined.

    Re: Harder HSC Papers 2000 was notoriously difficult. It suddenly switched from very doable do very difficult about half way through, so didn't discriminate well between students of different abilities.

    Ranks are NOT matched to HSC marks. For the purpose of arriving at your final assessment mark, internal MARKS are matched to HSC marks. As long as you are in a large enough cohort and not near the top or bottom, there is really no need to even worry about it.

    Actually I've found your problem. The question says x is the distance above the earth's surface, not the centre of the earth. So the initial conditions are x=0, v=400.
