Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon Without referring to nCr, nPr, factorials, or even simple multiplication, how else can this answer be generated? (Think Robert Langdon) [BTW, not sure what 'stars and bars' refers to, but you can get your calculation by simply counting "words" that can be...

Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon In how many ways can you climb 12 stairs by stepping 1 or 2 steps at a time? (Not necessarily all 1's or all 2's) Answer: 233

Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon It is a LOT easier than that. Each man sits next to 2 of the 5 women. So the probability is 2/5.

Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon Of course, there would be nothing wrong if that were not the case, right?

Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon I had 6/10C2 and somehow thought 10C2 was 90. Still don't know though why people insist on applying ordering to questions that don't require ordering.

Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon If the 2 people randomly choose seats, the probability of them choosing two adjacent seats on the same side of the table is definitely 1/15 regardless of whether sides are considered identical or different. I'm not sure what logic you are using to get that answer.

    Hard? Perms and Combs Q

Once a thread or comment is deemed important enough to reinstate, the deleter should be warned not to delete it again (unless there are other mitigating circumstances such as identifying information or .......? ).

I realised that. But it still makes me disinclined to spend my time answering his question.

Didn't you delete the entire thread the last time I took the time to explain an answer?

Re: 2015 permutation X2 marathon I'm not sure of the meaning of "symmetrically" in your question. Your question is saying there are 5 seats altogether, right? If so, I get 3/10, not your answer. Edit: Assuming you meant 10 seats, spread 3,2,3,2 around the four sides of the table, I get...

    Doing Extension 2 in prelim

I'm afraid you are wrong. If you are going to make a statement like that, you need to know the history of what you are talking about. Some time ago (I'm going to guess 20 years), some schools WERE starting the 4 unit course earlier than term 4. After complaints from students and teachers about...

It was a very emotional experience

Yes, I've done the same. I'm now trying to recall whether I have any soccer fanatics in my class who want to go into medicine.
