Our PDHPE classes got 1 prac a fortnight. If you want a lot of practical lessons than I'd recommend doing SLR if your school has it.

I'd guess around 900-1000 words as well. From what I've done at debating I think that if you speak at a decent pace and have average sized writing you should be able to write 12 palm cards for a 5 minute speech.

We're doing Science Fiction. Works out nicely for me seeing as I've already read Dune, Neuromancer and Brave New World. :) It gives a rather broad scope for related texts and creative writing as well.

Don't do Standard. From what I've heard, it's only slightly easier and it scales horribly. If you believe you are capable of improving your work ethic, then stay in Advanced.

My cousins went to BMGS and they liked it a lot. I've also played soccer there a couple of times and it seems very well equipped. If you can afford it, I'd definitely recommend BMGS.

My school has all of those dot point books as prescribed texts we have to buy. We rarely go through them in class but they are fantastic for revision and study. I would highly recommend them.
