    Are people smugglers doing good?

Sovereignty may be a source of legitimising force. It is more though. The acceptance of that sovereignty by its citizens maintains any existing legitimacy. The quest for the maintenance of the state is achieved through coercion. If that state is unable to maintain its position through...

Why do governments give young people a hard time?

I agree. I don't think it should be confined to young people. As you rightly say, cocaine is the drug of choice of the rich and famous. (Dealers should also be targeted, but that is another debate).

Why do governments give young people a hard time?

It is still law irrespective of those features, and should be treated as such. Who determines whether law is just or productive? You? The vast majority of the population do not believe the laws to be unjust. I don't see that the law must be necessarily just, or indeed fair. If the consensus...

    Are people smugglers doing good?

John Howard's famous words bear relevance to this debate. The 'moral' foundation of the quest for a better life might be pertinent in determining refugee status, and probably should be. However. it should not supersede the sovereign right of controlling the flow of persons into the governed...

Why do governments give young people a hard time?

Science supports the idea that the brain development of young people is such that danger is far harder to comprehend, and if it is identified, there is less reluctance to avoid it. It is an undeniable fact that young drivers are awfully overrepresented in motor vehicle collisions, in part due to...

Sharpest/most witty person in Australian Politics.

It's just a shame her voice is horrendously painful. Thus, any wit she might have possessed is lost. I just can't bear listening to her.

what do you love/hate about promininet australian politicians?

"On the question of".. I hate Rudd and this phrase.. That smarmy little smile, the vignette of deceit which hides his true character. The populace love him, yet I see through his little charade. The man is artificial at best..

    Australian Politics

I'm with Iron. The voting tendencies of the electorate in Australia are far different at the this point of the electoral cycle. Australians are generally not all that engaged in politics until the reality arrives that a decision must be made.

Your Thoughts: The Criminal Law, Intoxication and One Night Stands

Just record any session with a mobile phone.. worked for this bloke in the UK. Man cleared of rape after court shown phone footage of woman 'actively' taking part in sex | Mail Online The problem arises here though in that it might breach the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (although at first...

Your Thoughts: The Criminal Law, Intoxication and One Night Stands

The pertinent question is how the court interpret S.61HA (6) (a) of the Crimes Act.. I'm of the belief that the prosecution would have to prove that the victim was so substantially intoxicated as to lose normal cognitive abilities. It would be extremely difficult to prove.

Ron Christie predicts DOOM for Sydney's rail system

I tend to agree with Zimmerman and privatisation. The only issue with the privatisation of a rail network in my mind is the functioning of competition and the integration of services provided on different lines, by different providers (I'm sure Zimmerman can elaborate).

How do you know when it's time to move on?

I think the college part says it all. Type 'wild college' in google and you'll have your answer.. :haha:

*Shudder* Sexyness is more than just looks (which she doesn't have either), but even if she did have the looks it would be nullified by that horrendous voice..

Some on here will debate that... Hold on. You're a Queenslander. Aren't you supposed to love Kevin? On a side, attached is Australia's most attractive politician. I'm sure most will agree.

    Australian Politics

Not sure. Usually those interested in politics are nerds (i.e. Kevin Rudd). There are some interesting characters. Joe Hockedonian!

Ron Christie predicts DOOM for Sydney's rail system

No surprises there. The time is nigh for the opposition to propose a 'real' infrastructure plan. It's just a shame the finances of the state will be unable to support any such plan.
