Poll: 2009 Umat - Hardest section?

Section 2 was extremely hard. Couldn't do about 7 Q's in the end since the passages were difficult and long.

2009 UMAT - How did it go?

+1 That's exactly what happened to me... Took too long to read and ended up not doing the last 7 questions coz I didn't have time in section 2. I'm expecting the most horrible mark ever in that section.

    Phonon - seriously confused

I know that phonons are quanta of vibrational energy, but what role does it play in the BCS theory? I have seen Jacaranda Physics going on about exchange of phonons between electrons but I don't really get it. Can someone explain me the role of phonon in BCS theory in a way that will be...

    Air Resistance

how does adding mass decrease air resistance? It might decrease the impact of air resistance on pendulum motion though.

    Trig Proof

    $Assuming that you can prove the hint,$ \\$let M=3, N=1.$ \\sin3xsinx=2cos2x+1 \\sin3xsinx-2cos2x-1=0 \\0.5(cos2x-cos4x)-2cos2x-1=0$ using the hint$ \\0.5(cos2x-(cos^22x-sin^22x)-4cos2x-2)=0 \\0.5((-2cos^22x+cos2x+1)-4cos2x-2)=0 \\-0.5(2cos^22x+3cos2x+1)=0 \\-0.5(2cos2x+1)(cos2x+1)=0 \\ \\Thus...

    Equations Reducible to Quadratics

    square both sides 5+x+x+2sqrt(x^2+5x)=25 sqrt(x^2+5x)=10-x x^2+5x=100+x^2-20x 25x=100 x=4

    Integration by subs.

No, I was asking a simple question like are you sure the question says a/b^-1, which is just ab anyway? coz it's a strange way of writing and it has to be a/b, not a/b^-1 looking at the answer I.e. what drongoski is asking

    Integration by subs.

Sure that u got the highlighted part right? Coz the whole expression then = Int (cosxsinx)(2-sin^(2)x)^0.5 dx
