Well, I think they knew some Japanese in the first place...but I do something similar for German (well German movies/books/songs), I watch in English first, then I know what's going on, and I look up a few key words in German. Then when those words come up in the film, I know them, and I think...

My only advice is to do something that you seem to do anyway, and that is watch anime :D Everyone who beat me in Japanese last year watched anime and/or read manga, near constantly...so it must have worked, by some kind of immersion principle or something :uhhuh:
