Do you you need ext Math to do well??

Generally speaking, do the subjects that you're best at that the school offers, as that will usually get you your best possible ATAR/UAI. Don't stress too much over scaling, or the fact you can't do extension maths. Doing difficult subjects like extension maths isn't really worth it if you're...

Are you looking forward to getting your HSC results?

For those who have now finished the HSC - are you looking forward to getting your results ASAP - or are you hoping this month or so between the exams and results never ends? Personally, it sounds a bit lame, but I'm excited for the results.

Parents reaction to you not making it?

My parents don't care if I don't make it. Well - they do care - but I guess they care that I'm happy with my results more than anything. They don't want me to be disappointed with what I get. My mum said as long as I long as I tried my best, that's all she can expect and she's already proud of...

Future Plans: What ATAR/course/job are you aiming for?

I'm hoping to get into UNSW Law/Arts.

doing 10 units a bad option?

I used to do 14 units for a short period of time in year 12, and I couldn't handle it after awhile. I dropped to 12 units, and I found that easily manageable - and it made me stress less because I knew that I had 2 units that could back me up if I stuffed up in a particular area - but without...

SMH article on how shit is HSC English

What I've found is that preparing responses is satisfactory practice, but if the question is going to be unadaptable (most were adaptable in the HSC Paper 2 2009), you're 100 times better off just knowing themes, quotes, and how to apply them to different kinds of theses - instead of spewing out...

Which would be more helpful: prepare a variety of extended responses, or...?

Study ALL issues/topics briefly and have an essay outline for each (rather than preparing several in-depth) in preparation of the extended responses? For example either: 1) Write a whole essay, with statistics, relevant information, analysis, conclusion, etc. OR 2) Outline the structure for...

Belonging - 2 supp texts okay!

There are two types of people here: 1) People complaining about the original poster's comment (if it is true) and discussing the issue 2) People complaining about the people who are complaining (aka you) Aren't you technically wasting your time by being here also?

Belonging - 2 supp texts okay!

Actually, I think what some people say and/or do is at least somewhat influential. For example, maybe the Board would be marking the test differently if all the people who wrote more than 1 related text didn't complain. Maybe they might even be actually marking according to the question asked...

Belonging - 2 supp texts okay!

If the Board of Studies actually marks 2 related texts normally, I'll lose all respect for them. So if next years question asks for two related texts only and someone writes four, is that essay going to marked normally as well? Seriously, if they're going to do that they're better of just...

    General Thoughts: English Extension 1

Hyperbole much? 20 words per line, with 20 lines on one page = 400 words per page. 400 words x 11 pages = 4,400 words. 4,400 is basically within the range for major work for extension 2. And within 1 hour that is 1 word per 0.81 seconds. I really don't think so...

Do you lose marks for having 2 related texts?

How I think this should be resolved: Two people who are equally good at English do paper 1. All their vocabulary/sentence structure and ability to communicate ideas is at the same level. Bianca writes 60% of essay on prescribed text(s). The other 40% is on TWO related texts. Mike write 60%...

No Creative Title - Minus Marks?

Yes, I'm aware of the positive marking scheme. What I meant is that sometimes titles that don't relate to the stimulus might not gain extra marks, and could give the marker the wrong impression (e.g. if the title doesn't relate to the stimulus/question at all, it might indicate to the marker...

No Creative Title - Minus Marks?

You don't need a title. A title can either work positively or negatively - if it ties really well into your creative and relates to the question/stimulus, then it will be marked positively. However, the creative responses in English Ext 1 are supposed to be first drafts - so writing a title...

Related texts? Can they all be films?

I currently have three related texts (I will cut down to the two most appropriate in the exam). Two of them are films though. Would it be marked down if I only did films for my related texts? Are they expecting us to analyse different mediums for our related texts (because my prescribed texts...

    General Thoughts: Biology

    Question 4 is definitely A. Question 11 is B, even though I answered D.

    General Thoughts: Biology

For the action potential one, ended up drawing a diagram to show failed action potentials and the threshold, and describing sodium/potassium channels for depolarisation/repolarisation.

    General Thoughts: Biology

That's a good point... I think you're right. I guess the stomata basically close at night because they don't photosynthesis. When I did the question, I looked at it only from the perspective of transpiration, not photosynthesis.

    General Thoughts: Biology

Yeah, it said the embryo was screened. But 'screening' only tests for the presence of the gene. So if it was 'screened' to show the gene, it would need to be aborted to remove that gene from the population. I don't know, that question confused me.

    General Thoughts: Biology

I think question 11 is D because D shows a gradual slope (smallest during midday, largest during midnight). In B, the stomata are small at mightnight, which doesn't make much sense.
