Every school textbook will have their mistakes. I think that Conquering Chem by Smith is convoluted and all over the place. I'd prefer it more if it was more ordered and arranged in a better way.

If you believe that you'll score around a band four in chemisty, don't do it as it's not worth it. Think about it this way. Score band four in chem and that'll be crap for your UAI; conversely, score band six in legal and it'll be great for your UAI.

Intelligence is not COMPLETELY irrelevant when it comes to the HSC. But I agree that most of your marks will come from how much devotion/hard work you put into a subject.

Get a UAI aggregate of around 480/500. That equals a 100 UAI. This means that you need at least 95 in every subject you do, with some subjects much higher (e.g. Ext2 English or MX2).
