Most of my friends who do ancient and modern think that modern is harder. They attribute this to the fact that there's more of an urgency, or need to be critical and evaluative than ancient. I don't actually do ancient history (wish I could/did), but I would probably find ancient harder...

I think "top ranked" school should be any school in the top fifty, myself. To my knowledge, there are around 1000 schools in NSW. So top fifty is a good figure for me.
