I am currently undergoing subject selection in my preliminary year to finalize my choices for the 2015 HSC. Due to my current subject selections and passions i have ruled out many faculties offering undergraduate courses in university (Sciences, Arts, Medicine). Due to my location in suburban Sydney, i am currently looking at applying for any of the big 4 (UNSW, Usyd, UTS, Maquarie). I have forever yearned for a degree in business, but specifically i am not sure (probably marketing or management) and as a result i am currently looking into courses in each universities respective business or commerce faculty. However here in lies the problem, i am currently struggling with my 2U Mathematics course and feel it best to drop to the easier General Maths course which i know through application, i can achieve well in (most likely a band 6). My school ranked in the top 20 in 2013 and my personal rankings within my courses thus far are roughly in the top 25% (eg: 20/80 across the board), with a rank of 1 in business studies.

My question is: With an ATAR in the low 90's (a goal i think is achievable) and General Maths, is it possible to bear the course load of business or commerce degrees at UNSW or Usyd or is it really necessary to have the 2U Mathematics? Although there are no required knowledge or pre-requisites for the bulk of these business faculty courses, the assumed knowledge is Mathematics, so is the 2U Mathematics (mainly calculus) really crucial, or is it a viable thought that General Maths paired with a passion and understanding of business is enough?

thanks - :cool2:

You can bridge 2u later, it really isn't THAT much of a load
That is what i had envisioned, but wouldn't setting myself up for a bridging course later be more stress when a Uni workload is introduced?

thanks

You do a bridging course before uni begins (most of the time).

you are probably correct, i was just referencing the UNSW website

"No Maths or General Maths in High School?

The “Essential Mathematics for Higher Education, course no 29330” is delivered in partnership with the University of New South Wales and will cover the contents from the HSC 2 unit Mathematics course. The program is suitable for students who wish to improve their knowledge in Mathematics or are having difficulty with Mathematics in their first year of their chosen University Course."

Yeah there we go. Don't sacrifice your ATAR just because of a prerequisite. And, being very honest, there's a lot more help available to learn maths when you're in Uni rather than during High School.

I barely did well in 2u during high school and now I'm doing 3u/4u math in Uni. A guy in my class did General Maths and he is doing better than me in the course. So, it's really up to what you make of it :)

thanks, my thoughts exactly! i would rather succeed in my units and thus my ATAR, than having to push myself to achieve a lower mark and a lower ATAR for a course that i don't really need.
