"You get harsher sentences in australia for removing a plant from your own property than killing someone."

I find the announcement of this new legislation disgusting. Firstly, is the life one human worth more than another... Well, possibly. But, I find it unethical and unfair. I believe a Doctors life, is worth 132.0544^999999 *10 more than that of a police officer...

No they're not. They try to protect people.
They are here to uphold the law, not protect you. If protecting you just happens to coincide with the law then they should do it.
Or... you know. Sharia law. Eye for an eye :p
Shari'ah Law? Please kill yourself now.
who do i care more about, a nobel prize scientist, or a hobo on the street?
should i eat this burger in the safety of my nice home in front of my computer, or should i donate all my spare money to poor dying starving people in other countries and potentially save hundreds of them at a time?
we prioritise people's lives all the time, we all have double standards. we care more about a burger than the lives of a hundred african children
You're a terrible person.
no im saying we should kill them
realistically its a lot harder than that, you have to rehabilitate them so they dont reoffend and that takes money and theres the issue of encroaching on people's freedom, and all other shit which im not qualified to talk about
Go kill yourself.
And if they get life in prison, as suggested by others, there are no rehabilitation costs.

Yeah, cops are shit cunts.
Well, not all of them.
But it's not like they are smarter than the average bear so they shouldn't be treated any differently.

The Police are agents of the State and don't care for the law in the slightest. Almost all of their practices circumvent the law in order to uphold it which is fucking stupid

ie

Chasing down a non-violent criminal at 130km/h+ resulting in the death of civilians. Police care? Nah.

I don't believe that they're all good people. Some are corrupt and may do things that are not in the best interest of society. But I think police officers are genuinely trying to make a difference and to help people, making them good people, in my eyes.

How do they do this? By handing out speeding tickets?

How can the police protect people when their role isn't crime prevention but investigation?

They're kind of a deterrent that stops some people from committing crimes. I bet if they weren't there, crime rates would be like 50 times higher

Imposing the death penalty creates the implication that the legal system is perfect, in which it is not. Innocent people end up in jail, and under a death penalty system will inevitably be killed for something they are innocent of. At least under the current system these people can be released.

stats plz
okay

murder rates in death penalty states vs non death penalty states in America:

The murder rate in non-death penalty states has remained consistently lower than the rate in states with the death penalty, and the gap has grown since 1990.

a few more graphs, along with this one, can be found here
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/deterrence-states-without-death-penalty-have-had-consistently-lower-murder-rates#stateswithvwithout

also shown in this table (highlighted = non-death penalty states)
http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state#MRord

and here
A September 2000 New York Times survey found that during the last 20 years, the homicide rate in states with the death penalty has been 48 to 101 percent higher than in states without the death penalty.

http://blog.amnestyusa.org/deathpenalty/us-homicide-rates-and-the-death-penalty/ and http://www.amnestyusa.org/our-work/issues/death-penalty/us-death-penalty-facts/the-death-penalty-and-deterrence

...most experts do not believe that the death penalty or the carrying out of executions serve as deterrents to murder... 88.2% of respondents do not think that the death penalty deters murder...

A majority of respondents also expressed the opinion that death penalty states don’t have lower homicide rates than states where capital punishment has been abolished...

2007 murder rates in states that still had the death penalty exceeded those in states that have abolished it by no less than 42%. More than eighteen percent of surveyed experts went even further and actually expressed the belief that the death penalty leads to a higher rate of murders... ‘brutalization hypothesis.’
http://blog.amnestyusa.org/deathpenalty/a-clear-scientific-consensus-that-the-death-penalty-does-not-deter/

sure it stops the criminal from committing more crimes but if they knew that there was a possibility that they would be executed for murdering someone, wouldn't they then perhaps commit more crimes (e.g. kill witnesses) in order to avoid capture?
