Alright, well I'll list the main genres, and the top two games of each :D:

1. RPG:
1st - Final Fantasy VII
2nd - Dragon Age: Origins

2. Action:
1st - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 (FPS)
2nd (Tied) - Super Smash Bros Brawl
- Resident Evil 4

3. Adventure:
1st - Super Mario Brothers (A classic)
2nd - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (sorry Diablo)

4. Fighting:
1st - Soul Calibur II
2nd - Soul Calibur III (No other fighting games comes up to par with any of the Soul series)

5. Simulator:
1st - The Sims 2
2nd - Trauma Centre

6. Survival Horror:
1st - Silent Hill 2
2nd (Tied) - Clock Tower (1 & 3)
- Fatal Frame (a.k.a Project Zero)

7. RTS:
1st - Age of Mythology
2nd (Tied) - Civilization 4 (Beyond the Sword)
- Age of Empire series

I judged it based on context - as you can't expect a game like Final Fantasy VII to compete with the latest graphics behemoths now in stores, but at the time, they were massive breakthroughs.

Totally disagree with thatlist.

1. RPG:
1st - Final Fantasy VII <-- overrated. What about FFVI? That was THE BEST FF imo. The one where the villain was actually smart.
2nd - Dragon Age: Origins <-- never played so can't actually comment. But Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow were pretty awesome. Coming tied with Lufia II : Rise of the Sinistrals

2. Action:
1st - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 (FPS) <-- Overrated / Overhyped and is mediocre at best. The Original Metal Gear Solid on the PSX. Best espionage action ever. Period
2nd (Tied) - Super Smash Bros Brawl <-- This is more of a fighting game . .. .
- Resident Evil 4

3. Adventure:
1st - Super Mario Brothers (A classic)
2nd - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (sorry Diablo) <-- Twilght princess? Bring back the classic . Ergo- A link to the past

4. Fighting: <-- don't play a lot of fighting games.
1st - Soul Calibur II
2nd - Soul Calibur III (No other fighting games comes up to par with any of the Soul series)

5. Simulator:
1st - The Sims 2 <-- .. . . . Ace combat series anyone?
2nd - Trauma Centre

6. Survival Horror:
1st - Silent Hill 2 <-- Aliens Trilogy on the PS1: now THAT was survival HORROR.
2nd (Tied) - Clock Tower (1 & 3)
- Fatal Frame (a.k.a Project Zero) <-- Haven't played these

7. RTS:
1st - Age of Mythology <-- Empire total war/Total war series? Command and Conquer Series?
2nd (Tied) - Civilization 4 (Beyond the Sword)
- Age of Empire series <-- Starcraft? 10 years onwards and they're still playing it. One of THE MOST customizeable RTS's out (ie; custom maps, etc)

And in addition to these genres:
8. FPS:
1st - Half Life
2nd - Half life 2

9. Sports:
1st - NBA 2010 (just basing it on the graphics but OMG that game looks beautiful)
2nd - SSX Tricky - remember playing this back on the PS2 .. was such an awesome game.

10. Driving:
1st - Grand Turismo Series (because if u actually drove like an idiot, you would lose)
2nd - Need for speed / Burnout

Pause with space and have all the time in the world ftw?

Best play style imo is someone to freeze enemies, 2 damage and one heal

You realise almost all the things said on this board is subjective right?

1. RPG:
1st - Final Fantasy VII <-- overrated. What about FFVI? That was THE BEST FF imo. The one where the villain was actually smart.
You justified FFVI as the best simply because you thought so. Whilst I agree, it is a good RPG, I'm not going to deny a force like FFVII, which had monstrous sales figure, cult followings and even spawned its own spinoffs and movies (some which were quite bad) as being one of the best (if not the best) rpg of all time. At the time it was released it was wildly anticipated and a revolution in gaming.

Thus it's unfair of me to judge something as being unworthy just because my own opinion says so. For instance, whilst I dislike 'Star Wars' - I'm not going to disagree if it lands in the top 5 films of all time, due to the sheer amount of fans, and products spawned from it.

2nd - Dragon Age: Origins <-- never played so can't actually comment. But Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow were pretty awesome. Coming tied with Lufia II : Rise of the Sinistrals
Dragon Age saw a revolution and re-introduction into the 'dark fantasy' world. It's been over 5 years since Neverwinter Nights came out, and complemented with the high critic scores, Dragon Age is worthy of its high rank. Pokemon, whilst a fun game, just had the basic rpg controls and was meant to capitalize on the Pokemon craze at the time...

2. Action:
1st - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 (FPS) <-- Overrated / Overhyped and is mediocre at best. The Original Metal Gear Solid on the PSX. Best espionage action ever. Period
Once again, your opinion. Being one of the most sold FPS (if not the most) sold of all time, matched with the great critic scores obviously means this game is fantastic. Whilst not a fan of COD myself, I'n not going to put in a game I like better just because, I like it better, and not for its merits.

3. Adventure:
1st - Super Mario Brothers (A classic)
2nd - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (sorry Diablo) <-- Twilght princess? Bring back the classic . Ergo- A link to the past
Twilight Princess saw clever use of the Wii remote, instead of the old controller - styler controls. It also paid immense attention to detail, and is a very beautiful game. It also managed to snag quite a good score from the critics.

5. Simulator:
1st - The Sims 2 <-- .. . . . Ace combat series anyone?
2nd - Trauma Centre
Does Ace Combat even come close to Sims sales? No. Do the same amount of people play/enjoy Ace Combat compared to Sims? No.

6. Survival Horror:
1st - Silent Hill 2 <-- Aliens Trilogy on the PS1: now THAT was survival HORROR.
2nd (Tied) - Clock Tower (1 & 3)
- Fatal Frame (a.k.a Project Zero) <-- Haven't played these

Are you joking? Do you even know what survival horror even is? Considering it's my favourite genre, and you have the nerve to compare Silent Hill 2, one of best survival/psychological horror games of all time, with another dumb shooter game where you get a surplus amount of ammos, and doesn't even qualify as survival horror, clearly indicates you know little of the genre.

I've played Aliens, to Clock Tower, Resident Evils, Fatal Frames, Silent Hills, Kuon, Penumbria, to Alone in The Dark, and whilst Silent Hill 2 gives me nightmares (how disturbing is a Pyramid Head raping a monster nurse then killing her?) Aliens is a game I expect to find in the $5 and under Bargain Bin, cause that's all it's worth.

Age of Mythology is a great game as it revolutionized the RTS series, instead of making the minor tweaks like other RTS. It introduced a counter system, God Powers, and the austere, Minor God choices you'd have to make when you advanced. As great a game as Starcraft is, it's just an RTS. What's the main difference between it, and other RTSs? It's set in space...

But nonetheless, it would be about on par with the Age of Empire Series due to sales and fans.

So next time, if you plan to argue with someone, back you points up with something more than just your opinions. We're all entitled to it, but when you question someone else's, what makes yours any more valid than theirs?

Not sure that a lot of those games are actually under those categories...

Warning: I am a Nintendo fan, (subjectively) find the games better than any others, don't go calling me biased because I have an opinion, especially if I warned you.

Mario is a platformer for example (and for me it's hard to choose which Mario, may just conform and go with Super Mario Bros. 3).

Zelda can be classified as Adventure or maybe even puzzle game. OoT wins that for me. And don't call me a fan boy, I played that after TP.

Pokemon I would classify as Turn Based Strategy or RPG as you like. For me it's TBS. HG/SS preemptively wins that for me, this is my favourite generation of strategy, and Gold and Silver were my favourite games for the RPG.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl would either be a fighter, or a completely different genre, considering how different it is to the fighter. I'd say Fighter/Platformer (got to get back onto the edge/Fan Service. Either way it's my winner for that category.

Megaman 2 for action platformer.

FPS gets harder. Metroid Prime 3 is my favourite that has you shooting in the first person, but that is probably more adventure than anything else. It's either that or Time Splitters 2 (just because I got so much time out of that game, and it's so ridiculous, what other game lets you play as a monkey, a fish in a jar and a ginger bread man).

I will also say that we have to know that this will be subjective, say your favourite, and certainly don't say it based on sales and critic scores, those don't necessarily make it better.

Probably add some more later.

Sorry but if you haven't played Baldur's Gate 2, then you have no credibility in this area, and I can see that you haven't played it, or it would be number 1 on your list.

Also I found DA:O boring. The storyline was unoriginal, the fights had little to no variation in terms of difficulty and many areas (especially the dwarven city) became far too monotonous. If anyone can explain why this game was so highly acclaimed, please do, because to me this was a below average RPG.

Nigga please.

FPS ->TF2
FPS/RPG -> Bioshock Because I said so :p
RTS -> SC
RTT -> WiC
Fighter -> SF3A

Modern Warfare 2 can't wipe the first one's ass, the first one was all kinds of awesomeness combined.

These are the only two I care about, so I'll start here
3. Adventure:
1st - Super Mario Brothers (A classic)
2nd - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (sorry Diablo)
Mario Bros., meh :/ A fat Italian plumber on 'shrooms sounds more like a weird porno flick than a game to me. Personally, I always liked Kirby and Sonic far better. They always had more interesting adventures and better gameplay mechanics (except maybe Mario's super furry suit thing).
Twilight princess, great game, but let's face it: Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past stomp all over it. It really does lack the oomph that the earlier Zelda games had, and loses a lot of points on the Wii for the crappy control scheme.

7. RTS:
1st - Age of Mythology
2nd (Tied) - Civilization 4 (Beyond the Sword)
- Age of Empire series
Age of Mythology is hardly anything special :/ The tactical options are limited. Compare this, say, to the Total War series, where box selecting all your men and attacking something is a sure way to lose any battle. I don't know how you put it above AoE2 and didn't feel like seppuku'ing yourself afterwards :/ Also, Civ4 is a 4x game, not RTS. I agree, awesome game, but it's in the wrong spot. I'd say
  1. Sins of a solar empire
  2. Rise of Nations
followed closely by Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2 and a little further by World in Conflict. Sins has the scale (and variation, which was lacking in Supreme Commander) to keep you occupied for a long time and was insanely well balanced. Seriously, a small map had me back and forthing with 1 AI for 20 hours on the harder levels. Rise of Nations had tactical nuclear strikes and also made it a viable option to poor a good chunk of resources into tech (and defense) rather than just spamming out spearmen for the whole game.

As for the 4X genre:
  1. Civ: Call to power
  2. Galactic Civilizations II with the expansions
Civilization: Call to power was the best civ game made, IMHO, albeit race attributes and units were missed a little bit. GCII: Twilight of the Arnor was the most awesome shiz I have ever had the privilege of playing. Just the epic scale and technologies you get make it an incredible game, not to mention the fact you could build terror stars and blow up anyone you didn't like made it so much more awesome.

EDIT:
Oh, I forgot FPS. Given, I've been playing a lot of MW2 lately, but I have yet to find anything more awesome than the original Perfect Dark and also Golden Eye. Those were absolutely awesome ^_^

Fair enough, I find the story line awesome, don't even wanna skip the cutscenes (which is saying a lot for me).
It's rich in all the different party combos and unique play styles there are and I find it highly enjoyable. Easily one of the best games I've ever played.
I Haven't been to the dwarven city yet, I'm still in that dream world. But yeh I dunno, I just find it is pure epicness.
As for difficulty, that's really just because of the whole rpg thing, choose wherever you wanna go etc.
