I just dont want to get to uni and find its full of the same tools that i went to highschool with... what are the chances of finding genuine people who share your interests and views and arent a bunch of boring f*ckers? I'm going to assume theyre high but then again, you never know what you'll find.

It depends where you look.

believe it or not you are probably lucky. Now you get to re-invent yourself and start afresh with a clean slate. Your old friends won't be influencing your new friends and you will be more open to opportunities that present themselves that your old friends might have held you back from participating in. Embrace your freedom from them and talk to everyone that tries to talk to you. They don't have to end up being your best mates, but they could well introduce you people and activities that end up life-long passions.

Well i havn't started uni yet. But i went to a bridging course. from what I saw people are really friendly. people at uni are generally nice and you feel comfortable talking to them.

i guess u just have to remember there are a lot of people who also know no1 or little people and are looking to make new friends.

I went to a bridging course and everyone was travelling in large groups. It seems people form friends incredibly fast these days. :/

I HATED my first few weeks at uni. I knew absolutely no one in my course and missed lunchtimes my friends so much. Each lecture/tutorial I sat next to someone new, introduced myself etc etc but when it was over everyone seemed to go off in their newly founded groups and I'd be forced to wander off pretending to be busy. This happened regularly until I hardened up and one day bought lunch and just sat with some girls that looked familiar. They were both as lonerish as me and we're now good friends :)

You'll have a lot more in common with the people in your course than your friends at school because you've CHOSEN to do that course and often have similar interests. I suggest joining as many clubs as you can and getting involved in O-week crap because you will meet a lot of people. And even if you don't see them again for a few weeks, it's still nice seeing a familiar face around (and you can score a free lunch or something at these events). I agree with what other posters have said about people from your school, even if you never really spoke to them, they'll be very happy to talk to you as they don't know many people either!

Instead of going into second year uni I transferred courses..2 weeks into the semester...and had a lot of trouble meeting people as everyone already had their 'groups'. But you'll notice everyone's very friendly at uni (no 'popular' kids or whatever shit people stir at school) and once you've built up the courage to start some smalltalk you'll meet some awesome people.

I just went to the first day of O-Week. Other than the fact I completely embarrassed myself after failing at doing a sack race, it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. Everyone was friendly and nice. This one girl actually came up to me and we got to know each other before it started and so I wasn't completely alone. Only problem was that I'm doing Compsci and it's under the same faculty as Engineering. There's only like 20 doing the same course as me. So everyone I talked to were becoming Engineers ._.;

It's a bit like starting kindergarten or a new high school. Leaving your comfort zone not knowing many people or anyone at all

Look at yourselves now; you've all got many friends, well I hope so

Sure it's pretty awkward at the beginning, but, the positives far outweigh the negatives. A little like going out on a first date or watching an interracial porno with your friends

I'm pretty lucky. There's no one I know going to Sydney Uni, let alone a university in the area. It's a fresh start!

Had an orientation day yesterday. Met a few cool people so im not too worried about not finding decent, interesting people. The people i met went to the uni bar as soon as the day was over haha.. I think uni will be pretty cool... only four days till i find out what my first day is like. :D

my first day... was pretty average to be honest. nothing exciting.

first lecture was biostatistics at 11am. found my lecture easily, went in and sat down. learnt about mean, median and mode lmao. couldnt hear a word the lecturer was saying. then i had a massive 3 hour break which i spent with a friend from school- had lunch with her and then went to manning. then i had a 4pm psych lecture, sat down next to a random girl and just started chatting with her at the beginning and end of the lecture. we left the auditorium together and went our separate ways.

didnt really learn anything in these lectures, just went over administrative stuff (eg. textbook requirements, course outline, assessment outline, etc.)

Average lectures, highlight was the computing lecturer getting pissed off because the students from the previous lecture were queing to get out half an hour after our lecture started.
